As stated in Encyclopedia Britannica, “Gestalt therapy is a humanistic method of psychotherapy that takes a holistic approach to human experience by stressing individual responsibility and awareness of present psychological and physical needs (Gestalt Therapy). Gestalt therapy was first introduced by Frederick, Fritz, and Laura Perls in 1940. Gestalt therapy teaches people to become aware of situations in them and to respond to those situations fully and reasonably (Gestalt Therapy).
Frederick, Fritz, and Laura Perls were the founders of gestalt therapy. They first introduced gestalt therapy in 1940. Fritz was strongly influenced by many psychoanalysts. He did not agree with much of Freud’s work which is what led him to develop his own form of psychotherapy (Gestalt Therapy). He was very strongly influenced by Max Reinhard’s emphasis on nonverbal communication. Fritz and Laura spent much of their time in Berlin during the 1920’s which also had a large influence on their work (Wulf, 1996). Much of the work on gestalt therapy was also done in the United States where Fritz helped develop many Gestalt institutes in the 1960’s (Gestalt Therapy). Fritz and Laura both underwent psychoanalytic training in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Vienna. They trained with many psychoanalysts some of which include Karen Horney, Wilhelm Reich, and Frieda Fromm-Reichmann (Wulf, 1996). It is said that the gestalt therapy embodies the history and personality of Fritz Perls himself. Gestalt therapy has been said to be derived from Fritz’s personality more than a scientific, structured, empirically derived or theoretically consistent model of psychotherapy (Wagner-Moore, 2004).

This is where the therapist has the patient sit in a chair facing an empty chair and tells them to picture themselves, parts of themselves, or someone else in the chair that may be troubling them and have a conversation with them (Wagner-Moore, 2004). Gestalt therapy is a great intervention to use with addicts because it helps them to recognize their full potential and also helps them recognize the patterns of their addiction (Brownell, 2012).
