Geothermal Energy: An Innovative Solution
The earth is slowly being destroyed because its people hunger for energy. Currently, energy is mostly produced from fossil fuels, which cause great damage to the environment. The use of geothermal energy helps to alleviate some of the pressure on oil and coal, and is much gentler to the environment. People in areas surrounding geothermal plants, and those who work on or in the plant are affected for the better. Geothermal energy is a clean and renewable resource, and a great boon to life on earth.
With minimal pollution, the resource of geothermal energy is kinder to the environment than its energy-producing counterparts in coal and oil. There are essentially zero emissions due to the nature of the geothermal plants. They do not use many toxic materials in energy production. Though chemicals have the potential to damage the water supply, they are properly contained (National Geographic Society, “Geothermal Energy Information”). Because geothermal plants are usually located in remote areas, it is hard for the water to get to a place where it could affect people. The resource of geothermal energy causes minimal damage to the environment, but it is also a positive influence on many people.
Both the common good and individual rights are valued in this power source. It provides power constantly and creates jobs for locals (Union of Concerned Scientists, “How Geothermal Energy Works”). Pessimists may point out that it is expensive to build geothermal plants, but the operating costs are very low, allowing it to be competitive with other energy sources (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, “Geothermal Electricity”).
