President George Washington was the first to introduce the concept of isolationism. In his Farewell Address, President George Washington warned the nation to “avoid permanent alliances with foreign nations and to rely instead on temporary alliances for emergencies”(Nordlinger,13) . The United States policy of isolationism was maintained throughout most of the nineteenth century. In the wake of World War I, the policy of isolationism strengthened (Randolph,2012). The United States Congress rejected President Woodrow Wilson's condition of the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations (McCormick,257). During the early 1930s, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt feared that the United States would enter another war (Randolph,2012). Although he was an internationalist, FDR saw that it was in the nation’s best interest to not intervene in European and Asian conflicts and liaison in international politics. Americans viewed the 1920s and 1930s as the era of isolationism(Randolph,2012).
