How to Maintain a Totalitarian Government for Dummies Anyone is capable of establishing their own totalitarian regime, all you need is a little ingenuity. George Orwell’s 1984 is a commentary on how totalitarian governments diminish the humanity of their people and maintain their power. As Orwell is writing the novel in post war 1948, the rise of totalitarian governments around the world continues to be feared. The dystopian novel follows Winston, a member of the outer party in Oceania. Winston lives in a world with child spies, thought police, torture, and many other methods of maintaining order in the party. However, the leader of the party, Big Brother, uses telescreens as the most effective method of keeping control of the population. …show more content…

The telescreens never go off, and they are the only constant in Winston’s life. “Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safer, though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing.” (Orwell 3) This quote shows that Winston lives in constant fear of being caught by the party. It clearly emphasizes how controlling the party is and how impressive and powerful the telescreens are. A third mechanism Big Brother uses is rewriting actual events. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth and it is his job to rewrite historical documents to make them agree with what the party said has happened. In spite of this, the work is very sloppy because people still have memories of actual events in their minds that contrast to what is in the history books. If you can’t convince everyone, its not effective. Telescreens are clearly the most effective tactic Big Brother uses in 1984. They are everywhere, they scare the citizens, and they are capable of spitting propaganda out to control the way they think and act. Don’t believe that this is most effective? Take the little gadgets in millions of peoples pockets. It is probably capable of recording the owners every move. It knows where you go, what you text, who you email and call.
