“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another,” said a dauntless manifesto from the movie Divergent. I will be comparing dystopian characteristics present in 1984 by George Orwell to the movie Divergent based on the book by Veronica Roth to determine which subject most accurately represents Dystopia. A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through control. Dystopias, though an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. Big Brother is worshipped in 1984. There are signs all over that had Big Brother on it. Winston in the beginning of the book disliked the idea of Big Brother. Towards the end after he was tortured and beaten he finally to understand where everyone else stood. The last sentence of the book ends with Winston thinking, “He loved Big Brother.” (Orwell245) As in the movie the Founders of Chicago are worshipped the most. To the people of Chicago they are the one’s that saved their life and put them in there and put a wall up to keep people out. The fence is almost as the founders, they said it is there to protect them from anything from the war or whats left of the war. In 1984 they have a perfect world that Big Brother has created. That everyone loves their leader. Also a perfect system where people have jobs in each section and it never changes. They have the total control of everyone. In their system they teach their children to love Big Brother to listen to what they say to hope that we win the war. If they don’t trust Big Brother they are beaten and kept for many months and sometimes years it depends on how long it take to make them love Big Brother. They control more of the people in the book.
