Libya
Libya is located at the northern tip of Africa, and along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This fairly large country is also known as the Libyan Republic. Libya has 3 provinces, and 22 districts, which would be equivalent to states in the United States of America. Libya has had a very controversial history. Varying from the rule of Muammar Gaddafi’s dictatorship and many terrorist attacks, to the quiet lifeless desert that makes up most of the country.
The population of Libya is 6,244,174 people (Factbook 1). The official language of the country is Arabic, but Italian and English are also widely understood throughout the urban regions of the country (Factbook 2). The religion of Muslim accounts for 97% of the population, Christianity accounts for 2%, and other religions such as Hindu and Buddhist total for less than 1% of the population (Factbook 2). Libya operates under a transitioning government (Factbook 3). Ever since 1969, Libya had been under control by Muammar Gaddafi and a Dictatorship as a government (BBC 1). As of 2011, Gaddafi was killed by Libya’s own rebel forces and a new president was elected in 2012 (BBC 1). Libya is now operating under a Democratic government. Libya’s economy relies heavily on the drilling of oil and production of gas (LIbyan Culture 4). These two major components of Libya’s economy account for 96% of their exports, and 98% of the government’s revenues (Libyan Culture 4). In Libyan culture, the marriages are arranged by the girl or boy’s parents (Libyan Culture 5). Also, when the boy or girl that has decided that he or she is ready to marry, they have to marry someone within their family (Libyan Culture 5). Elizabeth Fernea entered El Nahra, Iraq as an innocent bystander. However, through her stay in the small Muslim village, she gained cultural insight to be passed on about not only El Nahra, but all foreign culture. As Fernea entered the village, she was viewed with a critical eye, ?It seemed to me that many times the women were talking about me, and not in a particularly friendly manner'; (70). The women of El Nahra could not understand why she was not with her entire family, and just her husband Bob. The women did not recognize her American lifestyle as proper. Conversely, BJ, as named by the village, and Bob did not view the El Nahra lifestyle as particularly proper either. They were viewing each other through their own cultural lenses. However, through their constant interaction, both sides began to recognize some benefits each culture possessed. It takes time, immersed in a particular community to understand the cultural ethos and eventually the community as a whole. Through Elizabeth Fernea?s ethnography on Iraq?s El Nahra village, we learn that all cultures have unique and equally important aspects.

The purpose of individual cultural assessment is to gain a greater understanding of the values and attitudes of another cultural group through an in depth interview with a member of the group of interest. For this assignment, the interviewee is a forty-eight years old Muslim woman from Bangladesh. Based on an extensive interview with Mrs. SK, the paper discusses many topics including cultural affiliations, cultural sanctions and restriction, religion and spirituality, health-related beliefs and practices, and patterns and traditional ideas within the Bengali Muslim community. In addition, celebrations and rituals will be explored and analyzed for its significance to the Bangladeshi culture.

The United States Military Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (HOA) is a geographical region that encompasses the countries of Djibouti, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, and neighboring Yemen. Each country in the region houses many culturally unique distinctions to include groups, which comprise the HOA area of operation. Specifically one of these culturally unique groups originates out of Yemen. The country of Yemen, according to a 2004 census, has reached almost 20 million people (UNDP, 2010). Over 45% of the population lives on less than $2.00 U.S. a day (UNDP, 2010). The poverty-stricken people in Yemen have shaped a cultural group that in essence contains the majority of the Country’s population. The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the current Yemen culture shaped by the effects of poverty on the people of Yemen. These effects span a wide array of problematic issues predicated on three major topics. The effects of poverty on the people of Yemen include severe health problems spanning a majority of the region, the decay of the Country’s political infrastructure, and the growing support of terrorist organizations in the region. The dilemmas in Yemen did not solely originate internally. Yemen is host to some 91,587 (as of 2007) refugees from Somalia (CIA, 2011). The wake of events perpetuated by the effects of poverty on the people of Yemen, left unchecked, will continue to erode with significant and lasting negative effects on the entire HOA Area of Responsibility (AOR) to include local, regional, and U.S. interests.

The ancient Greeks created the word "geography" from the roots "ge" for earth and "grapho" for "to write." These people experienced many adventures and needed a way to explain and communicate the differences between various lands. Today, researchers in the field of geography still focus on people and cultures (cultural geography), and the planet earth (physical geography).

Freedom: something taken for granted by citizens all over the first world countries. The struggle for freedom all around the world is a very real one. Recently, the fight for freedom has taken the oppressed by storm. All over the globe, there have been many examples of people fed up with corruption and ready to take control of their lives and the lives of their children. This is evident through the struggles for freedom seen in Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and most recently Ukraine. It’s 2014 and governments controlled by a central authority or dictator are still prevalent. Countries all over the world have been isolated and stripped of their individual voices. The struggle for freedom coexists with the struggle of finding a voice. A voice is what the Libyan people found in February of 2011 when they started protests against a regime that ruled for forty-two years in isolated dictatorship. Three years later, the very same voice that liberated them is one of the gigantic obstacles they’re facing in establishing a functioning government in the country. This emphatic voice that has been silenced for 42 years by an iron-fisted rule is now louder than ever. The consensus is that they want an operational democracy in place as soon as possible. But three years have passed, and the country is more restless than ever. The country is completely dysfunctional and there is no telling what the people will do next if a stable democratic constitution isn’t in place soon. Libya, though very dry and uninhabited, contains much history and ancient architecture. It is a very interesting country, and to think that that much land can be covered by flat desert is amazing. Libya is a well run country and very populated considering the conditions.
