Consumers are at the top of the food chain. Advancement in technology has changed the way of living and eating nutritious food without bioengineered or GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) genes. GMO’s are artificial organisms created from combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes used to increase animal feed and industrial growth in the world. Organic eating is beneficial to the wellbeing of the human body and its health.
Americans have eaten GMO’s for many years whether they knew they were eating them or against eating them. Genetically modified foods were first approved for human consumption in the United States two decades ago, and the amount of these foods worldwide is increasing every year. For example, these major crops are 72% of soy, 23% of maize, 47% of cotton and 21% of rapeseeds and cultivated in 25 countries (Von Gotz 1961). Most GMO foods are in fast-food restaurants, supermarkets, in processed foods and frozen ready foods as they are in hidden ingredients like Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Textured Vegetable Protein and artificial flavorings. In the new development of how GMO’s are created, these new types of foods produce their own insecticides and produce modified starches, and while this process is costly, there are overall fears on the consequences of how these foods impact human health. Not only that, many anti-GMO campaigns and organizations in the United States have advocated for rich or developed countries from planting GMO food crops, primarily wheat, rice, potatoes, fruits and vegetables because their perspective is that consumers have the right to know the truth about what they are eating. Healthy lifestyle choices and organic eating is beneficial to the health of the human body. Genetically modified foods are created and sold to consumers all over the world and continue to increase every year. In the last two decades, GMO foods have become popular and even though there are not direct studies or trials on GMO’s posing risks to the human body, there are enough studies and research to prove that GMO foods and ingredients can pose risks to the human body because they are not natural to the human diet. There are government agencies; organizations and public education resources available to help consumers in their right of knowing what ingredients are in the food they eat. Food labeling and verification processes confirm the use of non-GMO and farmers crops and foods.
