Introduction
Recently, there has been a huge uprise in reports from all over the world of new diseases that have affected much of the population today. Diseases such as obesity, Alzheimer’s, Celiac Disease, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and so much more have been on the rise. Researchers have suspected the culprit of these diseases to be our food. Along with the diseases, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) has also been on the rise. The more poor food we eat, the greater the potential harm to our health. One of the poor foods we consume is GMO: the altering of genes in food to produce desirable effects. These effects can range from an improvement in nutritional value, texture, flavor, and a longer shelf life. These effects may seem harmless and quite favorable. However, what makes this GMO so poor is because of the harmful side effects it actually produces. According to the Non-GMO Shopping Guide of the Institute for Responsible Technology, the technology of genetic engineering is currently very crude (ABOUT GMOs, n.d.). It is impossible to carry out the technology with accuracy, meaning that it can disrupt the DNA in an organism. In order to present a real danger to the health of the human body, one must put an impediment on the body's natural state. According to clinical instructor of medicine, Dr. Soram Khalsa, “when our bodies get a genetically modified food, it does not recognize it and doesn’t know what to do with it. We as doctors are realizing in these cases our body may be treating it as an allergen that it does not recognize. On the contrary, the tools of GE are created to snip nature’s crop by damaging the environment, increasing the number of herbicides and pesticides used and the risk of permanent genetic trash. Monsanto and other companies mention their seeds and food have been tested for safety. But no environment or food safety has been recorded on genetically engineered crops and foods before commercialization. The companies have done the whole enchilada within their level to steal the rights to safe and healthy foods from the societies and consumers. If you read the paper or watch the news, you’re undoubtedly aware of the debate raging over genetically modified food. Is it bad or is it good? Between the feuding sides, you might find yourself a little lost and wondering which side is right. Answers to seemingly simple questions have been blurred or exaggerated by both sides. On one side genetically modified food is more sustainable, safe, cheaper, easier to grow and has the potential of creating disease-fighting foods. Although this is positive and good intentioned, there may be unintended consequences that we have been quick to overlook. Those opposing genetically modified food clam that it is dangerous, harms the environment, increases health risks, and causes infertility and weight gain. Even things like the declining bee population may have closer ties to modified food than previously thought. We must look to science for answers. By studying genetically modified organisms (GMOs) we can guide our decision about whether we want to be consuming them.

“Our primary health care should begin on the farm and in our hearts, and not in some laboratory of biotech and pharmaceutical companies" (Gary Hopkins). There are scientific discoveries showing that DNA can be transmitted from one organism to another. Biotechnology has a process of genetic modifications that are advancing throughout the planet. In 2004, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) started to be grown by 8.25 million farmers in 17 countries (James, 2004). GMO’s is an organism whose material of genetics has been modified using genetic engineering techniques. The genetically modified organisms are being refined into our foods and freshly grown crops. GMO's are consumed into our bodies every day and also cause allergies, while others get sick off of them. GMO's tend to also be bad for our environment as well. The many crops are being grown and being affected, like for example soybeans. Genetically Modified Organisms must be monitored soon as possible because they are bad for our bodies, our environment, and our foods that we eat on an everyday basis.
Upon reviewing the history of Monsanto, one can see the transition of the corporate’s products from the artificial sweetener saccharine to one the most known herbicide, Roundup. Along the way, the company was involved in the production of other chemicals that destroyed the organization’s reputation and threatened in existence (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2013, pp.382-395). Eventually, in order to survive turbulent times, the company made a strategic move to develop a seed that was resistant to its own product. Interestingly enough, the genetically modified seed contains Roundup. With this in mind, Monsanto continues to utilize substantial resources to convince its stakeholders that GMO(s) are safe and its organizational practices are ethical. In efforts to deal with the lists of complaints that plagued Monsanto such as:
“Some studies have supported the premise that Roundup herbicide, used in conjunction with the GM seed called “Roundup Ready”, can be harmful to birds, insects, and particularly amphibians” (Ferrell, Thorne, & Ferrell, 2016, p.431). Additional studies indicate that umbilical, placental, and embryonic cells may be harmed by Roundup herbicide. While there is no direct link to Roundup herbicide killing honey bees, critics argue that Monsanto is killing off the bees creating the need for their mechanical Robobees to pollinate crops. Because wind, bees, and other insects carry seeds across the environment, organic farmers are concerned that their crops are being contaminated by the GM products. Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
Meanwhile, detrimental effects of GM seeds might outweigh their benefits. There is lack of researches that can gauge the long-term effects of GM seeds on humans and animals’ health.
