The importance of this issue is that these GMO’s can actually have a negative effect in our society in general. It could mutate in a negative way and cause cancer or other diseases. Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
Of course people are going to oppose for genetically modified foods because they are much more favorable in quality and production potential. These foods are chemically designed to be high quality bred foods, the best of the best. Ismail Serageldin, speaking on behalf of the World Bank, called the use of GM crops "crucial" to developing countries in the twenty-first century. He said such crops "could be a tremendous help in meeting the challenge of feeding an additional three billion human beings, 95 percent of them in the poor developing countries, on the same amount of land and water currently available." He is right in his statement as it is true that these foods will be able to sustain the people on this earth. But I say, for how long? If we already have a lot of people, and we put more food on the planet, the number of people on earth will increase even faster! Then we find ourselves fifty years later with probably 15 billion people, no space, and limited on potentially harming food. It will be the same situation we are in now, but worse!
Genetically modified foods could cross-pollinate with other plants and create an entirely new species. In addition, there is the danger of biotech-resistant weeds and insects evolving. GMO’s have the potential to alter ecosystems in significant ways. Companies are currently engineering salmon, tilapia, carp, and other fish to promote faster growth or to provide resistance to certain diseases. Aquaculture farms are located in oceans and other bodies of water and the fish escape the nets regularly, ecologists worry that genetically modified fish could breed with natural fish.
Fans of GMOs say we will be able to feed more people because farmers can grow more food because their crops are more resistant to the environment. GMOs also put less stress on the environment, by using less chemicals, and less tilling. Because they require fewer pesticides, land and water, GMOs help keep food production costs down resulting in lower prices for consumers. Some GM foods have a longer shelf life, allowing it to be transported to other countries who don’t have nutrient rich food. Better nutrition in the foods such as vitamin A-enhanced rice, or "golden rice," that is helping to reduce global vitamin A deficiencies. Another benefit is that scientists have engineered plants to produce vaccines, proteins, and other pharmaceutical goods in a process called "pharming."In addition to plants there are some genetically modified animals, such as a salmon, that grows much faster than the non-GMO salmon. But with many benefits comes many concerns. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. There are concerns over the fact that GMOs may lead to allergy risks, or even cause new allergies, although this has not been proven.Modified organisms may interbreed with natural organisms. If you read the paper or watch the news, you’re undoubtedly aware of the debate raging over genetically modified food. Is it bad or is it good? Between the feuding sides, you might find yourself a little lost and wondering which side is right. Answers to seemingly simple questions have been blurred or exaggerated by both sides. On one side genetically modified food is more sustainable, safe, cheaper, easier to grow and has the potential of creating disease-fighting foods. Although this is positive and good intentioned, there may be unintended consequences that we have been quick to overlook. Those opposing genetically modified food clam that it is dangerous, harms the environment, increases health risks, and causes infertility and weight gain. Even things like the declining bee population may have closer ties to modified food than previously thought. We must look to science for answers. By studying genetically modified organisms (GMOs) we can guide our decision about whether we want to be consuming them.
The genetic engineering of foods has, in one sense, been in existence for hundreds of years. The first time Gregor Mendel bred different varieties of pea plants to observe the various traits present in their offspring, the concept was born. Today, genetic engineering has developed into one of the most complex and advanced fields of scientific thinking, all the while provoking many questions and acquiring many opponents along the way. While there are compelling arguments presented for each side of the issue, the simple fact is that genetically modified (GM) foods are a reality, especially in the United States, as they are already present in many products that are consumed on a daily basis. Just as the market for GM foods has increased, the level of opposition has increased as well, even up to the point of terrorist action against producers, growers, and sellers of genetically modified foods. So the question is posed, will GM foods be the future or the failure of our agricultural system?

The food that you eat daily can contain GMOs that can contain things that can cause you to have allergies and even cause you to get cancer sometimes. GM crops can be harmful and dangerous for you. Another reason why GM crops are inadequate is because it can decrease biodiversity of plants and crops, and it can destroy rare species of plants. It can harm organisms that you might not mean to kill. Some people may say that GM crops can stop world hunger. IT WILL NOT! Research shows that some GM crops can not meet the nutritional needs of a human being. It will also not help solve world hunger because some GM crops need many resources to be able for them to produce into healthy crops and poor farmers don’t have much resources.

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms created in a lab by altering an organism’s DNA, are in almost everything we eat (Chevat and Pollan). In fact, 75% of all supermarket food contains some form of a GMO (Caldwell). They can be engineered to resist disease, pesticides, and herbicides, which has many environmental and human repercussions. Although genetically modified food is cheap for consumers, it is harmful to the environment and it is dangerous for humans to ingest, and therefore needs to be eliminated from our food supply.
