Did you know that around 60 percent of processed foods contain genetically modified organisms? This statistic comes from an article by Jennifer Ackerman regarding genetically modified foods. Widely available in the United States, genetically modified foods pose several benefits not only to the farmers but also the consumers. For example, a common crop that is often times genetically modified and that is frequently found in food is soybeans, “More than 90 percent of the farmland for soybeans in the United States is dedicated to genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant varieties” (McLure, 723).
A genetically modified organism is defined as an organism whose DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) has been modified in a way that would not occur in the natural world. This allows certain strains of crops to develop “favorable” genetics. For example, these changes may allow them to survive, possess nutritional qualities or have a higher crop yield. These organisms can in turn pose certain benefits; help contribute to the lowered cost of certain foods, provide a solution to end world hunger and enhance health with certain vitamins or minerals. “Specific foods can be developed to correct malnutrition… For example, “Golden Rice” has been genetically modified… to have increased beta-carotene content, which may help to overcome the severe vitamin A deficiencies” (Harris, 31). However, with the good qualities comes certain threats that occur. While many tend to favor the goods that appear with the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), the practice of GMO’s creates potential alarm to not only human health but the earth. ...ccording to McLure, researchers have documented pest that have developed resistance to insecticides. “Experts say Roundup and Bt have become so widespread that resistant mutations have developed faster than they normally in conventional crops…” (McLure, 724). Use of genetically modified crops not only creates resistant weeds but also superbugs. One example of a superbug is the rootworm. Rootworms cause damage to corns leaves and roots. Some farmers thus purchased genetically modified Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) corn seeds which became resistant to the rootworm. However, the rootworm became accustomed to the Bt (the herbicide found in the corn) and have now prompted companies to create different strains of modified seeds. The creation of strengthen pests is not the only concern that genetically modified organisms pose, but also the impact they produce on biodiversity.
