As we developed in genetic technology in the recent decades, we have opened the opportunities to do what was practically impossible in the past. The development of genetic engineering and stem cell research were a pivotal point in medicine history as they revolutionized & changed the techniques we use to handle various diseases. Genetic engineering and stem cell research both opened the possibilities for treatments & aid from what ranged from feasible daily-life aspects, like food and crops, to more serious diseases & injuries, like diabetes and spinal cord injury. Nevertheless, both have numerous advantages, but still how much help will they actually provide along with what negative impact will they have on society, for instance, in treating spinal cord injuries? Inevitably, millions of people suffer and are living with spinal cord injuries; whether they were from work, sports, or falls. The severity of the injury depends on the location of the injury along the vertebrae of the spinal cord. A victim may become paralyzed starting from a certain level of his body and downward. This means the victim could lose the sense of feeling in his or her limbs, and thus ending up in a wheelchair. There has been some unsuccessful treatment trials like the use of methylprednisolone, but it demonstrated a failure in treating the case as well as using hypothermia therapy. (Wikipedia 2009 online). However, a potential treatment has been found; stem cell transplant. Its aim is to lessen the paralysis and regenerate nerve fibers since nerve cells are not replaced when damaged. Now what if I told you that this utopia was a fast approaching reality? Everything from serious life threatening burns to lymphoma, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson’s Disease, Spinal Cord Injury, and Strokes could, in the very near future, be eliminated through the simple culturing and implementation of stem cell therapy . These diseases are no small component of the myriad of conditions that plagues the human race, and yet, the end for these horrible maladies could very well be in sight. Man has always sought to end suffering, largely without success, until now. the promise that stem cell therapy holds could completely change our world for the better. Already, stem cell therapy is being used to treat leukemia, immune disorders, hodgkins and non-hodgkins lymphoma, anemia and a profusion of other ailments. Human genetic engineering can provide humanity with the capability to construct “designer babies” as well as cure multiple hereditary diseases. This can be accomplished by changing a human’s genotype to produce a desired phenotype. The outcome could cure both birth defects and hereditary diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Human genetic engineering can also allow mankind to permanently remove a mutated gene through embryo screening as well as allow parents to choose the desired traits for their children. Negative outcomes of this technology may include the transmission of harmful diseases and the production of genetic mutations. The benefits of human genetic engineering outweigh the risks by providing mankind with cures to multiple deadly diseases.

The stem cell research controversy is one of the major headlines in bioscience and has been discussed and debated numerous times throughout the last decade or so.
Although genetic engineering seems to be more harmful than helpful, when used correctly, it will help the society prosper. Considering the technology our society has currently developed, genetic engineering is a difficult topic to discuss and confirm. If the researchers confirm this process, it may become easier for the scientists and will help cure the diseases easily. The debate, however, will still be on the rise because of the issue in human morals and ethics.
