By nature, humans are greedy. Once we obtain something, such as power, in this case, we demand more. Such primitive impulses can have devastating consequences on not only us, but others as well. This holds true when it comes to genetic engineering; the acquisition of such influence over nature can potentially devastate the human race. Eugenics, the theory of selective breeding applied to humans, is bound to grow in popularity as genetic engineering advances. This could be particularly debilitating to us, because it unifies the gene pool, which allows disease to quickly consume the population. These results are not set in stone and may thus be avoided if the proper boundaries are implemented. With genetic engineering on the horizon in our society, one must step back and contemplate on what the future may have in store for us. If humans, as a whole, do not change their ways, genetic engineering will be the last nail in their coffin. It will eat its way from the inside out; first playing with man’s tendency to be greedy, then with his capacity for corruption, and finally with his inclination to be better than all others. We are a corrupt race and we cannot allow ourselves to destroy the very thing that makes us who we are and genetic engineering is the vessel with which our demise is eminent.
