Starting with crops, there is a massive industry in the sector of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The main reasons for this are not actually for cost reasons. GMOs actually cost more than organic crops . However, they require less fertilizers, and some don’t require any pesticides because these crops have technologies built into them, one of the best being the ability to grow in multiple conditions. There is some money being saved from not using pesticides and even crop failure but the overall net profit does not look so good. “Since its establishment in US agriculture, engineered corn has cost farmers $659 million in corn price premiums, while profits generated totalled $567 million during the same investment period” . Though the future prospects of genetic engineering look fairly promising, right now we need to learn more about the technology. Lives have been lost due to testing and it is creating huge ethical debates. Also, whether GMO crops are safe and whether cross contamination of genes between crops could be an environmental problem, these are other issues that need to be addressed. For humans, the bottom line is that this technology is not currently ready. It is commonly used in plants and animals and humans do consume these products but for use in human genetics itself, it should not be used yet. Genetic engineering is hugely debated but also can have vast applications when the technology is mastered and fully understood.
