Genetic engineering is accepted and a necessary practice in biotechnology. However, its use in crops has raised so many controversies. Techniques for genetic alteration have increasingly advanced over the last century from a traditional selective breeding to injecting genes from one organism into another (Skancke, 2009). The purpose of modifications in crops is to improve or correct certain defects and to make them more desirable to consumers as well as increasing productivity.
Nearly a third of food products that are used in European countries are “genetically modified organisms”. In the United States this figure reaches 60% (Sanderson, 2007). Genetic engineering appeared in 1972 as a new direction in molecular biology. In 1996 began the commercial use of genetically modified plants. Since that time, the acreage of transgenic crops in the United States increased 25 times in the period from 1996-2000 (“Worldwatch Institute” 2016).

...etically Modified Foods need to be effectively examined to avoid negative effects on the human health and environment. GM foods are widely spread; as a result, the public members should be informed about GMOs so that they can make a decision on what to consume and what to avoid. There is a need to embrace new ways of food production. However, it is imperative to strike a balance between food production and the toxicity of some to the GM foods. GM food production results in the manufacture of harmful pesticides, which when introduced into the human body for long will be detrimental to the people’s health.
Through my research and information obtained, I would have to say that I am against the GMOs simply because the negative seem to outweigh the positive. I feel that the health risks and environmental risks are not worth the few advantages that the GMOs provide.
