Bacteria were the first organisms to be genetically modified in 1973. DNA containing new genes is inserted into the bacterial cell and the bacteria will then express those genes.
These genes can code for medicines and enzymes that process food.
The GMO market has grown so much since the 1990’s. GMOs are the main source of genetically modified foods. GMOs were available in most supermarkets in the U.S. In 1994, genetically modified food was first sold. Genetic modification can enhance the taste and quality of foods. It can also increase nutrients, improve yield, and improve resistance to pests and diseases. Food made from genetically modified plants, like corn, soy, and canola, are commonly sold in the United States. Most processed foods in the U.S. contain genetically modified organisms. Genetic modification is used to enhance the taste, quality, increase nutrients, improve yield and as well as improve resistance to pests and diseases. ... I do not agree with GMO’s being made and used because they can have negative effects on humans and animals. They are dangerous to humans, because someone can be allergic to the food produced. When people buy food, they are unaware that the product they are buying is genetically modified, because there is no labeling on the products. Although, it is not necessary to be listed on packaging, I still believe the Producers of GMOs should make everyone more aware of what they are buying. More study should be done before GMOs are allowed into the market. In my opinion, more harm than good is being done with GMOs.
All in all, genetically modified organisms are rapidly growing in the United States. They have both their pros and cons, but society deserves to know more information on what they are consuming daily, because it will likely have a toll on them in the long run.
