Science and technology are rapidly advancing everyday; in some ways for the better, and in some, for worse. One extremely controversial advance is genetic engineering. As this technology has high potential to do great things, I believe the power genetic engineering is growing out of control. Although society wants to see this concept used to fight disease and illness, enhance people 's lives, and make agriculture more sustainable, there needs to be a point where a line is drawn.
Genetic engineering, sometimes called genetic modification, is the process to alter the structure and nature of genes in humans, plants, and animals (what is genetic engineering). Because DNA is a code that is universal, genes can be manipulated not only within a specific organism, but between two different organisms not related. This means base pairs of DNA can be changed, a whole region of DNA can be ‘deleted’, and additional genes can be added. DNA can also be taken from one organism and combined with the DNA of another (what is genetic engineering). The concept of genetic engineering can be led back to the 1900’s when Gregor Mendel’s genetic theory was used to cross different plants to produce desired characteristics (history of genetic engineering). From then on different aspects of modern genetics were slowly discovered. DNA’s double helix structure, chromosomes, replication, restriction enzymes, and many more findings led to the unraveling of the genetic code, and eventually the beginning of GMO’s. In the early 1970’s Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen accomplished constructing the first functional organisms able to combine and replicate genetic information from different species (1973). ...ee genetic engineering as a means to improve the human race; extending our lifespans and boosting intelligence, this is an example of the technology taken in the wrong hands where the research is taken too far. Honest scientists interested in ending diseases and illnesses present today using genetic engineering show hopeful potential for the technology ( conservatives and progressives). Despite the worry, genetic engineering can have the potential to be great with a lot more research and responsible use when the technology is fully developed. I believe that gene editing could eventually be a remarkable treatment for disease, but only for individual consenting patients, anything beyond that is unethical. We as a society are technologically ready to further research on genetic engineering, but without specific limits, are not ready for the responsibility it will bring.
