Due to hard work, Wang Lung is able to rise in stature and wealth. As a dedicated farmer in The Good Earth by Pearl S. buck, he abides by strong morals. Even as his luck disappears, he spends his time making sure that he will prepare what is necessary for his land. Throughout his life, Wang Lung worked hard for what he received. Wang Lung's true love is his land, and when the gods turn against him, he works on his land and does as much as he can for his land. "The fields, although Wang Lung cultivated them desperately...the young wheat stalks...ceased their growing and stood motionless at first under the sun and at last dwindled and yellowed into a barren harvest...He carried water to them day after day after he had given up the wheat, the heavy wooden buckets slung upon a bamboo pole across his shoulders." This shows how much dedication Wang Lung has for his parched land. Through pain and hope, Wang Lung continues his hard work by putting all he has into his land.
