Gender inequality in the workforce is not only a current civil rights issue but one that spans back through our history as a nation. Rooted as far back as the 1800s when the Cult of Domesticity came to its peak, a woman was to stay in the home and that any form of work outside of the home was masculine and any work found within or within very close proximity of the home was feminine. At this time, white, upper, and middle class women stayed at home, cooked, cleaned and raised their children while their husbands were the sole breadwinners.
The industrial revolution led many more lower class women to seek jobs outside of the home. While there was a move for women working in various industrial jobs in areas such as domestic service and textile factories, conditions were dangerous and wages were low. Despite the harsh conditions, some women found independance, social mobility, and a better standard of living but the majority of women who worked in the industrial revolution were caught in the cycle of poverty due to low wages and little opportunity to advance within their jobs. We’ve made a lot of progress when it comes to gender inequality in the workforce. The pay gap is smaller today when compared to 55 cents for every white man’s dollar in 1950. But contemporary issues such as the even wider pay gap women of color face and cases such as Lily Ledbetter, that directly challenged wage inequality and discrimination on the basis of gender, are still present today. In order to continue to make progress against inequality citizens in the workforce, women especially, need to speak up and take a stand against the gendered pay gap and rise about the traditional notion that women cannot be both a mother and successful in her career.
