Are you surprised that this is a 2006 case? Why or why not?
I am not surprised that this case happened in 2006. However, by this time I would have assumed that gender roles in positions such as Firefighting and the police department would be accommodating and accepting. There are a lot of rules of society, laws and general discussion that are influenced by gender equality. I’m unsure why multiple facilities that Ms. Kline and Ms. Wedow visited obtained inadequate restrooms and changing areas. In 2006, I would assume that all employment places would have a restroom designated for men and a restroom designated for women. As a woman it had to be very uncomfortable for them to go through a men’s locker room in order to use the restroom. In one …show more content…

The fire department did not give any reasonable explanations as to why they did not provide the female fire fighters with the proper fitting uniforms, there for I can conclude that the department really did not have any valid reason as to why they did not provide the females with the proper clothing and equipment. I honestly think the fire department treated the lady employees this way because they did not want them to be there. I feel that giving them oversized men’s clothing instead of their women’s sized clothing symbolized that Firefighting is a man’s job.
There is no direct reasoning as tom why the women’s claims were ignored. They also has a lack of representation for women throughout several of the fire stations. For eight years the two ladies had to endure uncomfortable situations. Maybe the fire department did not think they women would stay and be employed for as long as they were, or maybe this was the departments way of “saving money”. Whatever the excuse may be, I commend the two women for still working in the fire department despite the fact that they were treated unfairly. I don’t know what I would have done if I were in their shoes, I probably would have filed a complaint after a few months of not receiving my proper uniform. If that didn’t work I probably would have gave up my position as a Firefighter, there’s no way I can imagine myself working for an employer for over one year if the working conditions were unsuitable for
