Analyzing the earning of men vs. women reveal women earning only 79% of what a man earns in the same occupation. The issue at hand is shocking considering that women have transitioned throughout history, leaving behind the stereotypes of stay at home moms and have become CEO’s, business owners, and more. Inequality in pay based on gender is simply discrimination. Factors like education do not close the pay gap. In a study done by Forbes women who had an advanced degree was only found to earn 74% in comparison to a male who held the same level of education. Women are forced to work twice as hard as men in order to achieve the same level of compensation for their work. One of the few occupations that guarantee equal pay to both men and women in the same occupation is the military. This social issue encompasses the entire nation, from small town America to the Big Apple making it a macro-level problem.
The pay gap between men and women can be evaluated more thoroughly in terms of the sociological imagination. In conclusion, the pay gap existing between men and women in the workforce is an alarming issue at hand in our nation. From a sociological perspective it is understood that this issue does not solely lie on one women in one place or time; instead it encompasses a variety of factors taking it from a personal issue for women to a public issue for our nation. Social forces and the structural-functional theory can play a pivotal role in changing the direction our nation has gone with this inequality and fighting for a stronger and more equal future for women in the workforce.
