There is a gendered seniority structure in Australia, it is pyramidal for women, and tower-like for men. Women comprise roughly half of the workforce, yet they make up less than one-quarter of directors in Australia. The representation of women steadily declines when moving up the management levels, with women comprising only 26.1% of key management personnel (KMP) positions, and 17.3% of CEO positions (WGEA 2014). This needs to change, there needs to be more women in leadership positions in Australia as society benefits greatly when this happens. Gender diversity creates innovation, which in turn increases a nation’s overall creative output. It is also inefficient for Australia to only utilise half of the nation’s available talent pool. Society thus needs to create an environment that supports both men and women in achieving leadership positions. There needs to be a vast increase in the number of women in leadership positions in Australia in order for the country to grow as a nation.

Society benefits from having women in leadership roles as gender diversity creates innovation which in turn would boost Australia’s overall creative output. Studies have shown that gender diversity fosters novel solutions, leading to radical innovation within companies, as well as in the market (Plataforma SINC 2014). Boards that feature women, on average per annum deliver 7 per cent higher returns for investors than companies that feature no women on their boards (Macdonald, 2015). Gender diversity promotes different perspectives and insights, a combination which ultimately offers a wider range of ideas. Gender diversity f...

... and women need to be given these opportunities.

Australia can only benefit from more women in positions of leadership. Women are essential in securing Australia’s continued creative and economic growth. Men and women should not be working against one another, but instead together. Australia needs to focus on evolving into a society that offers both men and women the same opportunities to succeed into positions of leadership. If Australia does not achieve this, the country will economically and creatively stagnate. The potential for new innovation and economic growth will remain halved unless women are inducted into more leadership roles in Australia. A continued lack of women in key leadership roles is the worst possible outcome for Australia. Australia has the opportunity to reach great heights, but only if they enlist the help of the country’s entire population.

Acceptance of Diversity Essay

- If I had been asked to define diversity 10 years ago, I would have defined it simply as being different; specifically, of different race, gender and age. These beliefs are similar to the primary dimensions of Marilyn Loden’s Diversity Wheel (Canas & Sondak, 2014). I have viewed diversity primarily in context to my existence in the world around me and Loden’s primary dimensions most closely describe what I thought of when I heard the term diversity. Thankfully, I have grown more in the past 10 years and would now define diversity not just as Loden’s primary dimensions but would say that diversity is an acceptance of the differences between people and these differences permeate all areas of li...   [tags: Racial Diversity, United States, Acceptance]
