Gender Discrimination Essay
Back in 1890, fewer than one percent of females were hired primarily outside of the household. Over a century, the female work demographic has risen dramatically, with more and more women standing together to fight for gender equality. Some males still believe that the workplace is no place for a female. However, women have made a positive impact on society’s views of females coming back into the workforce. Unfortunately, in many developed countries women are at a disadvantage when it comes to money. In spite of acts to help close the gap, women still only earn 77 percent of what men are paid for an equal amount of work. Distractions outside of the workplace can prevent women from gaining higher positions in their respective fields. Often, their jobs are put on hold for their children, while males are then available to go after promotions and receive raises. As this double standard shows, women are more likely to experience an unfair disadvantage in the workplace rather than a benefit. All these facts show that there are many unfair situations in which women experience a lack of opportunity, conformity to gender roles, and double standards.
New efforts are being made to close the wage gap between men and women in America. Still, we have started to realize it is not closing as fast as we hoped. According to the Institute For Women’s Policy Research, “ the wage gap will not close at this rate until 2058, which is another generation away for women of today.” So if you’re holding your breath thinking the wage gap will soon be long gone, think again. Claire Cain Miller from The New York Times explained that, “a majority of the pay gap between men and women actually comes from differences within occupations, not between them — and widens in the highest-paying ones like business, law and medicine.” This fact is an example of the data recently being discovered in today’s feminist society. Facts like these can be positive and can help the progression of closing the wage gap. Summarizing the information gathered, women’s career choices have nothing to do with the wage gap. What lies between them is the root of problem. Helping ignorant people become aware of the wage gap statistic can only empower individuals to take action and speak out.
In conclusion, Revelations to debunk the wage gap statistic have only helped close the gap, creating more opportunity for women across the globe.
