Although women have been active members of the workforce for almost 70 years now, there is still a bias against women working. In the United States, there is still an economic bias against women throughout the stages of hiring, payment, and stereotypical jobs. Women should be able to be hired for the same jobs as men, be paid the same, understand that they can choose their jobs, and pay the same amount of money as men do for similar products.
According to federal law (Gender Discriminations Law & Legal Definition), “Gender discrimination, also known as sexual discrimination, is any action that specifically denies opportunities, privileges, or rewards to a person (or a group) because of gender.” This means that if an employer gives something additional to a man and not to a woman, it is classified as gender discrimination. Gender discrimination in the workplace can happen all along the path that employees go on, from getting a job to being paid. Gender discrimination is illegal, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t being done.
Gender discrimination can happen in many different scenarios. A couple of these scenarios exist in the article titled “Sex Discrimination At Work.” One common scenario is when a woman is promoted to a higher position and finds out that a man who was also promoted to the same position is being paid more than she is. This is an example of gender discrimination through salary. Employers often pay women less because of the stereotypical image of women. Women are usually looked upon as not being able to work as well as men. Stereotypically, women are supposed to stay at home cooking and caring for children. In conclusion, women are often discriminated against in many different scenarios. From hiring to salary and even to purchasing items, women usually get the short end of the stick. Even though this gender discrimination is unlawful, employers still refuse women the same privileges that men have. Women should not be afraid to stand up to gender discrimination, as it is against the law and the employers will be punished by federal law if enough evidence is shown that gender discrimination is at play. Women shouldn’t have to fight gender discrimination by themselves; the federal government should step in to assist women more than they are doing now.
