Gender codes in America have been discussed and debated by many. There has been many conflicts and controversy over this topic due to the public image associate with both sexes. Media and entertainment have continuously added fuel to the fire regarding gender codes in America by making it one of the most talked about issues in the United States. This issues both concern men and women and their social status in America. Americans has been facing these issues for years trying to come up with some solution to put the gender hierarchy in America to rest. When one looks at the issues and conflicts of gender roles in America it is obvious that one can see the many differences, biases, and unequal opportunities provided for both men and women in America. In contrast, men have been seen as more dominate than women because of their masculine abilities and other traits and most importantly their profound responsibility of being the provider and head of the household. This societal standard pictured the ideal American woman running the household and taking care of the children while her husband provided for the family. However, between 1770 and 1860, this societal standard began to tear at the seams. Throughout this time period, women began to search for a new ideal of American womanhood by questioning and breaking the barriers society had placed upon them.

We, as Americans, have come towards the concept of equality in relationships. Male dominant relationships were common throughout the forties and fifties in the United States. Women were deemed as housewives, whose job was to clean and have dinner ready for their husband's return from work. Imagining women in that type of status is difficult to do in society. Sexual violence is sometimes thought of as a natural part of life. That men have an inherit biological trait that predisposes them to violence and that it cannot be helped. The famous quote is “boys will be boys” meaning that men have no control over their actions and that if they sexual assault someone, that it is just human nature. This is in fact false. There is nothing in the biological makeup of males that can explain away sexual violence. It is a learned cultural behavior generated by gender norms and the medias perpetuation of sexual violence.
Children learn gender roles based on parental socialization, meaning what is talked about by society and what is culturally accepted. They learn based on what they watch or what they hear and see from their family, friends, and school. The children learn that women are nurturing and expressive while men are strong and independent. The documentary states that in many advertisements, adult women are seen to portraying traits of a young girl. Women and men are nestled into predetermined cultural molds when it comes to gender in American society. Women play the roles of mothers, housekeepers, and servants to their husbands and children, and men act as providers, protectors, and heads of the household. These gender roles stem from the many culture myths that exist pertaining to America, including those of the model family, education, liberty, and of gender. The majority of these myths are misconceptions, but linger because we, as Americans, do not analyze or question them. The misconception of gender suggests that biological truths no longer dictate our gender roles as men and women; they derive from cultural myths. We, as a nation, need to do severe critical thinking about this delusion of gender, how has limited us in the home, media, and education, how it currently limits us, and what the results of the current and future changes in gender roles will be.
