Women have been overlooked and unequally paid for decades. In 1963 when John F. Kennedy signed The Equal Pay Act, it was for the mere reason of trying to get rid of the gender pay gap. Then, during that time, women were causing an uproar making it impossible for people to work in peace. Women were fighting for what they felt were right; they were fighting to be an equal. If we continue to have such an unjust way in the workplace as we’ve had since 1960 it will take another 45 years for men and women to be equally paid. Do women have another 45 years to fight for something that should not be up for debate?
In an article I read about Lilly Ledbetter versus the Goodyear Tire and Rubbery Co. Lilly Ledbetter was almost 60 years old and on the verge of retiring when she first caught on that she was being shortchanged at work by what her lawyer called a "good old boys" network. An anonymous letter turned up out of the blue and revealed to Ledbetter she was making substantially less money than male co-workers at the Goodyear tire plant where she worked. Women have earned the right to be treated and paid equally as men. Men are no more superior than a woman. There are many factors that contribute to the wage gap between women and men. I including “workplace discrimination, a lack of women-friendly policies and resources in the workplace; persistent stereotypes that steer women and men toward different education, and different societal expectations for wives compared to husbands and mothers compared to fathers.” A change must occur for women to be treated equal for equal value of work as men. If not now this change may never happen in this society.
