The Geert Hofstede 's cultural dimensions theory is a framework for cross-cultural communication, developed by Geert Hofstede.This model was used to compare Denmark and The United States. The model uses values that distinguished both the cultures of Denmark and The United States from each other. The model was categorized into six groups: power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence. Power distance deals with the fact that all individuals in society are not equal. According to the Hofstede, the United States scored 40 while Denmark scored 18. This goes to show the level of inequality among the different cultures. Power in the United States is not distributed equally. The more powerful a person is, the more they look down and sometimes exploit those who are less powerful. This is generally accepted in the United States and is categorized as High Power Distance. We need to start focusing on others, thinking of ways in which to help others. Be more family oriented, spending fewer hours in the office. We need to be content with whatever we have and less power-driven, trying to outshine the other person. Money is important but it should not be the driving force behind someone’s happiness. Happiness should not be about the how much money we have, the car we drive, or the house we live in or the expensive clothes and jewelry that we have it is about making others happy. This is clearly seen in how the Danes live their lives. If Americans started thinking this way people would be much happier. Happiness should be about giving back, making others happy and also savoring in whatever makes us happy.
