Legalizing gay marriage has been a controversial topic in the past few years. In my opinion, gay people should be allowed to get married because it is a civil right. It shouldn 't matter what gender they prefer because they 're still regular people. Making gay marriage illegal, is the same as taking away someone 's freedom and civil rights. That is unethical and completely awful. There 's no harm being done by letting two people who are in love with each other get married. However, many religious fundamentalists are against this and believe gay marriage is wrong and needs to be stopped. Homosexual couples should have the right to get married because it 's a civil right and their sexual preference doesn 't make them any less human.

Even in heterosexual couples, they can 't help and choose who they fall in love with; It just happens. It 's the same concept with homosexual couples. They can 't choose who they 'll fall in love with, love is just something that happens. It 's unexpected and unpredictable. Who are we to tell two people they can 't complete their love by getting married only because they are a homosexual couple. Gay marriage isn 't hurting anyone else. It 's providing happiness for two people who are in love with each other. After all, that 's what marriage is about; love and care for one …show more content…
Allowing homosexual couples to get married will bring in more marriages and a bigger amount of money to the economy. A big part of getting married is the financial aspect of it. "Marriage ceremonies entail a significant expense, and it was estimated by the Comptroller of New York that the added infusion from legalizing same sex couple marriages would add $142 million to the economy. This not only accounts for the profits that businesses will receive if same-sex marriage is allowed, but also for the payments these couples must make to acquire marriage licenses."
As an American citizen, a person should be entitled to marry whoever they choose, regardless of gender or sexual preference. Gay marriage is something that some people consider to be taboo while other people are very supportive of it; I am one of the latter. The ability to marry someone is a basic human right and it should not be taken away from someone because they love a person of the same gender. One of the main reasons that gay marriage is illegal in the United States is because of what the Bible says about it, regardless of the fact that the first Amendment of the US Constitution says that there is to be a separation between church and state. Approximately three point eight percent of the United States population is made up of people
With the economic support, the adoption rates rising, and the equality same-sex couples deserve, gay marriage deserves to be legalized throughout the nation and the world. Rejecting the right of marriage to these couples hurts them and the way they are able to live their lives. Everyone deserves marriage and life equality despite the person they love because we have equality rights based on us as an individual, not on who we decide to love.
The issue of gay marriage needs little introduction as it is one of the most widely contended and discussed topics in the United States of America. While the issue is relatively recent one has to question why this is even an issue to begin with. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Arguments come from both religious groups, as well as secular focused sources. Reasoning against gay marriage ranges from religious immorality, to the idea that giving gays the right to marry would support minoritarianism (giving minority special privileges and advantages in either a legislative or societal capacity). There are countless arguments besides those mentioned, few of which have any substantial grounds to stand on. Gay marriage causes no political or communal grief, except for those who strongly oppose it now. Even for those people gay people exist either way. Whether they are married or not will not change that and their lives will not be dramatically changed from it. Gay marriage has no valid reason to be outlawed and there are plenty of reasons to allow it.
Same-sex marriage is an issue of equal rights. All human beings should be treated equally and allowed the same options. So allowing gay couples to wed would promote equality for everyone and break this barrier we have between heterosexuals and homosexuals. Straight couples marry for love and to start a family, but they also do it to gain access to all the benefits and legal protections that come with it. Adoption, hospital visitations, child support, and family insurance are just a few examples of obligations and protections that are denied to same-sex couples. Cleary, homosexuals won’t get the same options heterosexuals do it they aren’t allowed to get married, thus ensuring that they are not treated equally, making this an equal rights issue.
Gay marriage is a matter of civil rights. Jennifer Hamady wrote, “Marriage, as an institution, has evolved greatly throughout human history.” Not long ago, marriage implied having stay-at-home wives, with the male being the “bread-winner” but this is no longer the case. Marriage has evolved to not only being a more equal union but also, many women are taking the role as the primary earner. In the same way, marriage could evolve from being just between a man and a woman to same-sex couples. On ProCon.org, it stated that marriage, among many other things, is "one of the basic civil rights of man," and same-sex marriages should be looked at similarly to and receive the same protection as interracial marriages. In 2012, the NAACP named same-sex marriage as "one of the key civil rights struggles of our time," and just like other civil rights issues of the past, we must learn to accept it and move past it. Marriage constitutes certain rights. In legal standing, spousal rights should apply to same-sex couples, allowing them to reap the same benefits such as tax deductions, insurance, and recognition of their union. This includes rights recognition as being part of your “family” du...
Allowing same-sex marriages would change the basic definition of marriage. Marriage is an important commitment of a man and a woman who contribute to civilization. Therefore, the loss of contributions due to someone’s sexual orientation should not be rewarded with a privilege such as marriage. Same-sex marriages affect many factors such as children, the concept of marriage, and humanity. However, it is not a misdemeanor to love somebody of the same gender but it can rigorously damage many aspects of life.
Not allowing same-sex couples a license to marry was hindering them from receiving valuable benefits that they could enjoy. Now that they have received fair treatment they can obtain “[the] 1,138 benefits, rights and protections available to married couples in federal law alone” (“Gay Marriage - ProCon.org”). Same-sex couples should get, and now receive, the opportunities to marry and have the 1,138 benefits that come with it. Their relationships should just be accepted more now that it’s completely legal. I understand that it may not be how people were raised to think, but adapting to change and being open-minded is a key aspect throughout life. Looking more into the topic, “[an] Oct. 2, 2009 analysis by the New York Times estimated that same-sex couples denied marriage benefits [would] incur an additional $41,196 to $467,562 in expenses over their lifetimes compared with married heterosexual couples” (Bernard). Unmarried couples would have to pay a substantial amount of money just because they couldn’t wed. Many people wanted to deprive them of marrying and didn’t consider how it could damage them financially. If the opposers were in this situation they’d declare it unconstitutional and demand equal rights. That’s exactly how the gay couples felt but were continuously denied them until recently. It’s unfair to allow these rights to straight couples and not gay couples when it affects things like their health coverage, financial stability, and child custody. Sensible people wouldn’t want others to have to struggle in such a way that could impact someone’s life and the others around
Marriage is about love and love knows no race, religion or GENDER! The topic of same sex marriages have been in the headlines for quite a while now. There is no wrong or right side of this issue but there are advocates and adversaries. If a marriage is “supposed” to be about nothing but a partnership between two people that are better together than apart, why exclude homosexuals from being happy? Same sex marriages should not be banned because it is untraditional; but should be recognized like any other marriage involves love and it might be different but we all should be recognized as equals.
There are many opponents of gay people as it is, and they all have their reasons to dislike the idea of permitting them get married. One of the main reasons is that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation. Because gay couples are unable to have children, they should not be allowed to marry (Schiffen 495). Another main argument is that the word marriage means the union of one man and one woman. This is a long-standing theme of most major Western religions. Under a proposed bill known as the Defense of Marriage act, marriage is defined as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” Furthermore, it defines a spouse as “ a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife” (What 1). Under these guidelines, it is quite obvious that gay couples would not be eligible for marriage. People against homosexual marriage also say that it is a person’s choice to be gay. Since the individual chooses to be a homosexual, they should not be given special privileges. Another argument that you hear is that these couples should not get married simply because of the torment and ridicule they would be faced with in their everyday lives. There are news reports from across America telling about how a gay person was beaten or killed just because they were looked at as different. Some of these people would end up the target of verbal abuse and maybe even physical abuse, just because some heterosexual people see them as different.
“It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married” (Procon.org), said Barack Obama the 44th and current president of the United States. The gay right movement started in 1969, riots, struggles, and problems followed after. In today’s society, it has been showed that people are opening up to gay rights. There has been effort in protecting the gays and discrimination against gays is now considered a hate crime and is illegal. However, gay rights still to this day struggle with state and federal legal circumstances. Same- sex marriage needs to be legal, couples who choose to be of the same-sex should be allowed to celebrate their commitment with each other the way heterosexual couples get to, both publicly and society acceptable.
Homosexuals believe that no sin is greater than the other and that people against same sex marriage are sinning for judging them. The bible states “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” Only God can judge and he has the last say. God loves everyone equally the same and they feel like if God can still love them, why cannot we. Therefore, homosexuals who want to be married just want the same rights and treatments as heterosexuals.
In recent years, same-sex marriage has become a more controversial topic on whether it’s right or wrong. People should not feel coerced to agree with something they believe is wrong; clearly, same-sex marriage is immoral and unnatural. Many complications come with same-sex marriages including financial pressures, social pressures, moral pressures, and health risks.
The argument really comes down to letting adults do as they wish, they are not hurting anybody. Homosexuals getting married really has no effect on anybody but themselves. Although with all the extra weddings, gifts, and honeymoons, it would actually be a good way to stimulate the economy. Most People don’t realize that just because gay people get married doesn’t always have to mean that it’s hurting someone else. Why is it that only some states make same-sex marriage legal? All states should be legal. Everyone should be able to marry anyone of their choice and who cares about other people’s opinions, as long as there happy.
Firstly I will discuss the reasons for marriage equality. I argue marriage equality is in the best interest for family life. Allowing homosexuals to form stable committed relationships through marriage would allow for healthier homosexual relationships. You can’t prevent people from being homosexual however giving those people the right to marry can help them experience greater personal happiness. Studies have suggested that not only does legalizing marriage in an area generally make homosexual individuals in that area happier; it also makes them physically and mentally healthier and saves them money on health care (Hatzenbuehler, O’Cleirigh, Grasso, Mayer, Safren, & Bradford, 20012). I don’t see any compelling reason to take away the joy homosexuals get from marriage, this is one of the many reasons I support marriage equality.
Marriage is just one way for two people to show their love for another. Whether it is two men, two women, or a man and a woman, love is love. People against gay marriage do not have the right to deny people of showing their love for one another. Everyone deserves the same rights as Americans and also just as people. The United States of America promotes freedom, liberty, and justice for all people. Same-sex couples are many times not included when it comes to marriage rights.
