Gay Marriage
This information will be providing the historical background about same – sex marriage in the United States and also brief information and facts about gay adoption and benefits as a gay couple. Next will be seeking through the tradition of family and the way society envisions family. Sandra Bem is a theorist that talks about the theory Gender Role Theory and the impacts that gender and sex roles stereotypes may have on society. Sandra Bem has had great success within psychology with her research in sex roles, unconventional families and gender schema theory.
LGBT is an acronym that stands for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender along with heterosexual they describe people’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This initialism has been used since the early 1990s. LGBT is used to emphasize the diversity of sexuality and cultures referring to anyone who is non-heterosexual. The letter Q was added to LGBT in 1996 to represent the word queer which means sexually attracted to men, women, and transgender. In May, 1970, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell was the first gay couple to apply for same –sex marriage license in Minnesota. Unions between people of same sex have existed for thousands of year and over 30 African cultures such as Kikuyu and Nuer have participated with these unions. Same-sex marriage was not legal until the 2000s but television has advertised gay couple’s marriages years before. The Fox comedy series “Roc” was the first American television to broadcast gay marriage when Uncle Russell married his partner. The sitcom “Roseanne” featured a same sex marriage in 1995 and in 1996 “Friends” broadcasted a lesbian wedding on national television. The first legally documented gay marriage in the United S...

Yet there are still many people who object gay adaptation because traditionally a child that does not grow up with “mom and dad” will most likely become homosexual during their lifestyle. Some states are becoming more open-minded, claim to find no difference in measure of parenting or child outcomes (Gay adoption, 2002). Society biggest question is: How will boys learn to become men? Where will they find their male role model? Will they grow up to be gay? The answer to that is, “boyness” is inherent and not instilled or taught by mother or father. Research actually reported that children that are raised in gay family are less restricted and less bound than children in heterosexual family. There were no stereotypes or labels such as those are “boy things”, and “girl things” just toys for both gender to enjoy.
