Nowadays, being gay is everywhere. It seems like a trip to the supermarket is never complete without a magazine or commercial on the radio advertising gay pride. It seems like the most effective of these trials has to be the hit television show Glee. Many of the shows episodes revolve on the aspect be yourself, whether you are gay, straight, handicapped, or popular. But only one of these has caught the eye of the American public. Gay pride, is it possible to have been born this way? If people can be born this way, what is the proof?
According to Jeffrey Satinover, MD, there is no evidence that shows homosexuality is genetic. Stating “homosexuality may run in families but you get viruses from your parents too, and some bad habits…” (Top 10 Pros). Brian S. Mustanski, PhD, agrees that though there may be no ‘gay’ gene, multiple genes potentially interacting with the environment could explain sexual orientation. Ex- gays are living proof that homosexuality is not fixed permanently. Therefore, for someone to be born gay, obviously that person would not be able to change ones sexual preference.
At one point homosexuality was considered to be a psychological disorder. Although the American Psychological Association states, “When researchers examined data about these people who were not in therapy, the idea that homosexuality was a mental illness was quickly found to be untrue.” According to Rita Mae Brown, speech, 28 August 1982, “No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love. The only queer people are those who don't love anybody (Quotes on Homosexuality).” Kathleen Melonakos, founder of Delaware Family Foundation, wants to know how it’s not considered a mental disorder. Considering that homosexuality involves a life threatening behavior with an addictive component which has serious health implications. “That word "lesbian" sounds like a disease. And straight men know because they're sure that they're the cure,” Denise McCanles (Quotes on Homosexuality).
Though many researchers will agree that homosexuality is not genetic, still, others beg to differ. published an article entitled “Guide to Coming Out,” the article states ‘sexuality and gender identity are not choices any more than being left-handed or having brown eyes or being heterosexual are choices…The choice is in deciding how to live your life.’ With society always shoving their view into the minds of Americans second of everyday, it is not that hard to see where the confusion arises.

The Problematic Hunt for a Gay Gene Essay

- A genetic study that has concerned many people is the search for the ‘gay gene’. The finding of this gene began in the 90’s and is still in question to whether the gene exists and if it truly influences sexual orientation. Several studies have been completed that look into sexual orientation through behavioral and molecular genetics. Most of these studies, however, have failed to be replicated and they bring about ethical issues. Simon LeVay, a neuroscientist who studied brain functions and sexual orientation (Wikipedia contributors, 2014), published an article, “A Difference in Hypothalamic Structure Between Heterosexual and Homosexual Men,” in 1991, that suggested a biological reasoning to...   [tags: legal issues, homophobic]

- Sexual Orientation: Is it Innate or a learned behavior. The most controversial and researched topic in science today is the argument whether sexual orientation in humans is innate or a learned behavior. Scientist are even conducting research and studies to see if there is something called a “gay-gene” that could be affecting us during the stages of Mitosis. Americans' Acceptance of Homosexuality Essay

- ... In this particular case study, they were all raised as girls and kept in the dark regarding their gender transferring surgery. If being homosexual was solely culturally induced these people who have always known themselves to be women, would follow the cultural binds of society and be attracted to men. However that’s not the case, Reiner found that the faux females ended up being attracted to other women. There is no doubt that there are several scientific studies and pieces of evidence suggesting and supporting that being gay is genetic and not influenced by societal nudging....   [tags: gay gene, made or born?]

Essay about Homosexuality is a Choice Rather than Genetics

- Many people now believe the reporting of many popular newspapers and magazines report of the "discovery" of a link between a certain gene and homosexuality, but hasn't it been considered a choice for such a long time. Is homosexuality a choice rather than genetic. To answer this question we'll start off by revealing some myths of homosexuality. The next part will explain the difference between a behavioral trait and a genetic trait. Finally I'll end be unveiling the truth behind the "homosexual gene." There are many things that the homosexual activists say are true, but those "truths" are merely myths in need of correction....   [tags: The Gay Gene]

Homosexuals are Not Born Gay Essay

- If a young boy has a feminine throw he may be homosexual. Also if he has a soft or high voice this would be another detection that one would be homosexual. There have been many conclusions and statements as to what causes homosexuality. These are the traits that normally are classed with someone who is homosexual. The popular argument in today’s society is that homosexuality is something that is inborn, genetically linked to an enlarged gland in the brain or due to a particular chromosome. This would prove that it is natural, and that it is luck of the draw whether one is homosexual....   [tags: Gay Lesbian Homosexual Papers]

Pro Gay Marriage Rights Essay

- The exploration for gay marriages has been severe over time that it can only be liken to the movements that fought for civil right for the Americans long before the law stood in. It is sudden that in the quest for equal marriage rights, the gay rights activists happen to be few as they work their way out to the constitution. But their struggle is being supported by the public and bearing in mind that the political shift is also working to their advantage (Newton, 69-70). Despite the tireless effort of the equal rights activists, their opponents already happen to have support of the constitution and the big question remains to, when this will actually happen....   [tags: homosexual activisim, politics]

The Case Against Passing a Law or Bill that Would Allow Gay Marriage Essay

- America was founded on the ideals of freedom. Written into the first amendment of the constitution is the basic right to freedom of speech, press, protest, and religion. However, where does one draw the line to how far these freedoms can go. Are they limitless, or should they be regulated. In reality, the regulation of these freedoms is necessary, otherwise they could be interpreted and used in many different ways that are potentially detrimental. The main complication is how far to let these rights stretch, and when they must be cut off....   [tags: homosexual rights, legislation]

Homosexuality: Its Natural Essay

- For decades people have struggled with their feelings of homosexuals. Homosexuality used to be something that a person hid. If a person was gay, they would do almost anything to make sure that no one found out. If the public found out about a person being homosexual, they labeled that as being sick or twisted. They were also, at times, presented with rude comments about how they chose to live their life. However, times are changing and while still being presented with discrimination more and more people are letting their gay status be known to the world....   [tags: homosexuality, gay, public, politics]

Jeffrey Satinover, MD, Founder and former director of the Sterling Institute for Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Medicine says, "Homosexuality may run in families but you get viruses from your parents, too, and some bad habits. Not everything that is familial is innate or genetic.
When it comes to being born ‘gay,’ many churches have their fair say. According to Walter Wink, Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Auburn Theological Seminary, the bible clearly condemns homosexuality. Wink also states that the real issue behind it is whether or not the biblical judgment is correct. While The Catholic Medical Association reports that sexual orientation is treatable and about “30% of those who seek ‘ex-gay’ therapy experience a ‘freedom of symptoms’ while 30% experience ‘Improvement’.” “My lesbianism is an act of Christian charity. All those women out there praying for a man, and I'm giving them my share, Rita Mae Brown (Quotes on Homosexuality).”
So if there is a ‘gay’ gene, why is it a crime to love someone of the same sex? “There is nothing wrong with going to bed with someone of your own sex. People should be very free with sex, they should draw the line at goats,” Elton John (Quotes on Homosexuality). At what point is the line drawn to whether or not love can be found anywhere? Mustanski believes that genes play an important part as to whether someone turns out to be gay or not. Though Satinover will argue all day and night that the environment is the real reason behind how a person turns out, maybe both ideas play a part together.
William Byne, MD, PhD, Director of the laboratory of neuroanatomy and Morphometrics at Mount Sinal School of Medicine, believes “the term “homosexual gene” is, therefore, without meaning, useless one proposes that a particular gene, perhaps through a hormonal mechanism, organizes the brain specifically to support a homosexual orientation.” Testing the reality of whether it is a choice to be gay or straight is definitely been put on the board. In many cases there have been gay men switch their game and become straight. These ‘ex-gays’ are the only non-biblical evidence that a gay gene does not exist.
Due to a lacking proof that the ‘gay’ gene can neither exist nor seize to exist, the argument will probably go on for many more years to come. Though everyone will voice their very own opinion on the matter, evidence is needed in order to truly convince the world around them. “To hear two American men congratulating each other on being heterosexual is one of the most chilling experiences - and unique to the United States. You don't hear two Italians sitting around complimenting each other because they actually like to go to bed with women. The American is hysterical about his manhood,” Gore Vidal (Quotes on Homosexuality).
