William Gates III, commonly known as Bill Gates, is a major figure in the field of computing and has been since the 1970’s. Gates’ most well-known contribution is the founding and continuation of Microsoft, a major player in the software industry. Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 with long time friend Paul Allen. Since then, Microsoft has grown to a 49 building campus in Redmond, Washington, with thousands of employees (Sherman 31). Bill Gates has had a tremendous part in the personal computing development, and surely the technology industry today would be different without him.
Gates was born on October 28th, 1955 in Seattle as the son of a lawyer. It was obvious in his childhood that he would be brilliant and different, which became apparent at age 8 when he decided to read the encyclopedia, eventually stopping at “P” (Sherman 7). Because of his astute intelligence, his parents sent him to Lakeside School, a private boarding school, for seventh grade. It was here where he met future business partner, Paul Allen (Watson 149). The two became very close due to their shared interest in computing. Gates and his friends were so intelligent and good with computers that they were hired by a company to write a payroll program while they were still in school (Watson 150). In 1973, Gates attended Harvard University, where he studied pre-law like his father. However, his intentions to become a lawyer fizzled in 1975 when he read an article about a microcomputer kit published in the magazine Popular Electronics. The kit was called the Altair 8800, created by the company MITS. This prompted Allen and Gates to create software for the Altair, and so BASIC was created. BASIC stands for “Beginner’s All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code” (Sherm...

...erman 31). It wasn’t until 1990, when Windows 3.0 was launched, and Microsoft spent $10 million on advertisements, that Microsoft finally saw its ultimate success with its operating system (Sherman 32).
Since Microsoft’s operating system was finally doing well, it also wanted to improve upon additional software. With the creation of the World Wide Web in the 1990’s, Microsoft felt the need to compete with other established internet browsers. Because of Microsoft’s dominating OS, they were able to work deals with PC manufacturers to bundle Windows with Internet Explorer 2.0. This move got Gates and Microsoft in trouble with the government. In 1998, United States vs Microsoft was filed and 2 years later the judge ruled that Microsoft “used its monopoly of the PC operating system market to unfairly dominate the browser market and eliminate its competition (Watson 180).
