In today’s physical eduction world, there are a wide variety of ways to teach in a classroom. Every single student that enters a classroom has a different way of understanding things and each one has a different and unique way to learn information. This is true in every classroom, especially in the P.E. classroom. Each teacher may have a specific preference on how they want to teach their students, but in order for students to enjoy and learn about different aspects of P.E. each teaching style should be introduced. One of the many teaching styles is called Games for Understanding. This is not a commonly used style within the P.E. classroom but teachers should definitely start to get familiar with it.
Teaching games for understanding, or TGfU was first introduced in the 1960’s by P.E. lecturer Alan Wade with the help of Charles Hughes of Loughborough University. Their initial hope was to get students to understand the importance of the games skills being taught through principles of play. In 1982 however, David Bunker and Rod Thorpe were the ones who officially created the TGfU model at Loughborough University in the UK.
What exactly is the TGfU model? The TGfU model is a “learner- and game- centered approach to sport-related games learning with strong ties to a constructivist approach to learning” (Griffin, Butler, 2). What this means is instead of teaching a game or activity as a whole, the teacher breaks down the activity into different parts, putting emphasis on the tactical ways to approach a game. Teaching games for understanding has not been utilized to the best of its ability yet in classrooms. Since there are so many other teaching styles and models, teachers may shy away from wanting to learn another way to teach a lesson. The TGfU model is a great way to teach games effectively by teaching tactical skills with skill development. This model is all about the progression of skills through modified steps of a game. This gives the students a chance to be exposed to primary rules, fundamental skills and tactical problems that they can apply to future games and even in life. “Tell me, I forget… Show me, I understand… Involve me, I remember.”
