Halo: Ghosts of Onyx begins in the year 2531 with a raid on an Insurrectionist base by the SPARTAN-II Blue Team. Their goal was to recover stolen FERNIS nuclear warheads, but were captured by rebel general Howard Graves; a former UNSC Marine who defected to the Insurrectionists. However, Spartan Kurt-051 manages to slip away from the team before they are captured, and helps the rest of Blue team escape Insurrectionist capture. One month after the raid, Blue Team is put on a mission to investigate a ruptured Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine. Kurt is sent ahead to scout it out, but as he gets closer to the engine, his equipment begins to malfunction. Eventually, the thruster pack he’s using malfunctions and Kurt is sent spiraling out into space without coms. Kurt is then recovered by ONI and wakes up a month later to be briefed of the SPARTAN-III program by Vice Admiral Margaret Orlenda Parangosky, Rear Admiral Ned Rich, Captain Aaron G. Gibson, and Colonel James Ackerson aboard the UNSC Point of No Return. Kurt is then promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade and sent to Onyx to reduce 497 volunteers to 300 trainees. Kurt test’s the candidates’ want for revenge against the alien juggernaut that destroyed their homes and families by making them perform a midnight high-altitude jump out of Pelican dropships. Any child who didn’t jump would lose their chance to be Spartans, and any child who jumped kept that chance. Even with the advanced training and Semi-powered Infiltration Armor (SPI), all 300 Spartans would die in Operation: PROMETHEUS. Kurt returns to the Point of No Return to be informed of the success of Alpha Company and to begin training Beta Company. Kurt learns that all of Alpha Company was wiped out in Operation: PROMETHEUS a... ... middle of paper ... ... the Spartans. Sangheili advance with Kig-Yar energy gauntlets while their brethren fire over their heads with plasma rifles and needlers. They are disposed of by grenades, rocket launchers, and rifles. The Sangheili attack again, but this time with Mgalekgolo support. They manage to kill Holly-G003, and severely would Kurt. As the Covenant press the Spartans, Kurt orders everyone to go through the slipspace portal and into the stockpile. Kurt stays behind to ensure that Mendez, Halsey, and the Spartans make it through safely. Kurt sacrifices himself so deny the Covenant the Forerunner technologies by detonating two FERNIS nuclear warheads, causing a chain-reaction within Onyx that results in the planet’s destruction. Doctor Halsey, CPO Mendez, and teams Blue and Saber are then trapped inside a Micro Dyson Sphere and attempt to find the stockpile of Forerunner tech.

They boys just wanted to finish him right now. But Spencer went down and looked at him. The boy was bleeding from his leg. So Spencer dragged him up to the hilltop. The next thing that spencer saw was a bright flash, and then he had problems breathing. He could hear the voices fading away. Spencer was trying to call for help but he felt to much pain in his chest. He was thinking about his dad and how sorry he was to make the decision to go to war.

Lucie Brock-Broido’s “The Halo That Would Not Light” is a poem about the loss of childhood and its inevitable end. When one is born “the (raptor’s) beak (lets) loose of you” (ll 1-2), and drops your tiny body into the “scarab-colored hollow” (ll 3-4). The raptor letting the tiny body loose into the scarab colored hollow alludes to the old nursery stories of the stork delivering babies in cribs for their new families. When children are young they often have positive outlooks on the world and believe that everything is possible, like the magic in the “hollow hat” (l 13) or the “cardboard box” (l 5). The Killer Angels is a historical novel that recounts the battle of the Civil War, specifically focusing on the Battle of Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the point of view of several soldiers and commanding officers from both sides, Michael Shaara effectively illustrates the sentiments behind the war that tore America in two, from the strategic battle plans to the emotional hardships endured by all.
To look at this epistemologically, there is an understanding that almost every aspect involved in this culture was derived for the good of the polis. This seemed to be a very proud and arrogant people. A city with no walls, and in almost certainty, only natural born were allowed to earn citizenship. To even be called a Spartan meant years of fighting, service and status. Tyrtaeus states this argument best in the last line of his work. “Thus a man should endeavor to reach this high place of courage with all his heart, and, so trying, never be backward in war.” These writings are great resources for Spartan’s war enhanced values and societal customs, but lack in evidence of governmental affairs and religion.
In the book House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the main character, Matt, lives the life of a clone, he was brought into the world as a cell from El Patrón's skin. Matt grows up in a shack in a field of opium poppies with his "mother" Celia, but he is discovered by 3 kids who live at the estate. When he tries to meet them, he cuts his feet on the glass from a broken window and is rushed back to the estate to see a doctor. He spends the next 6 months in a room full of sawdust kept as a prisoner because clones are basically livestock. The estate owner, the richest man in the world, and the person Matt is cloned from finally finds him and rescues him. He then proceeds to live his life in the mansion, all while developing an extremely close
Facing hardships, problems, or obstacles shouldn’t discourage one from completing their task or job. Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.
Two weeks earlier in the darkness of an early April morning, I stand surrounded by close to three hundred other soldiers, filled with excitement and uncertainty. The air is heavy with the promise of another scorching day with the humidity reaching hundred percent. This day is called Zero Day. This is the day that determines which of the close to three hundred potential candidates get to make up the next class of two hundred Air Assault Students. Throughout the years, there have been thousands of American soldiers killed in battle. Out of these thousands, there are some that are unidentified and unknown. This means that the families of these soldiers are never able to see their son or daughter ever again. To honor these unidentified soldiers, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was created in Arlington National Cemetery in 1921. On top of this hill, this monument contains the remains of unknown soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The tomb is guarded twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. It has been guarded every minute of every day since 1937. Photographer D. Myles Cullen captured one of these tomb guards in action. This visual depicts this tomb guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which is significant because it honors the many soldiers that have died in war without being identified.
1968 the year of the TET offensive in Vietnam. The TET offensive takes place on the TET holiday and the North Vietnam planned and attack on South Vietnam. Full Metal Jacket follows Joker a new recruit that is heading into basic training. This movies touches on the ideas of what the war was like for both people that were enrolling into the marines and people who were serving in Vietnam. During the movie there is feelings of both hope and sadness that run through the body.
The Spartan military gained eternal military fame when 300 Spartan soldiers defeated an entire Persian army during the Peloponnesian War (Papakyriakou, 2013). Their unmatched army would become the pinnacle of dominance that would inspire later western culture. Sparta was the leader of all things military for any years, but they unfortunately could not keep up with Athens’ navy and the Persian’s sheer number of soldiers. The ideals that Sparta lived by are still evident in some parts of the military today. Not all men are required to fight of course, but the idea of obedience that stemmed from their training is still very evident. Sparta’s legacy is still relevant thousands of years later, and will remain evident as we continue to learn about military history.
Invasion of the Body Snatcher (1956) was a story about a quite little town that many see as perfect the perfect American town with white picket fences and kind neighbors, but something has changed everyone has changed. The movie serves as a warning about the threat of communists in the United States. Throughout the film there are examples of this threat and how dangerous it can be if we all change to the communist way of life such as a dog almost being run over, an uncle telling stories without the same emotion, and the main characters no longer being in love because one turned into a pod person.

I’m the type of guy that would go out and buy a Call of Duty game, pop it open and gather all my friends and jump right into it. Call of Duty is one of the most popular games out and many people love to play. It is competitive, it has online play, and you can also create a clan or group to play against other people around the world online. Call of Duty dates back to 2003 and really wasn’t popular then because it’s all about killing your enemy. Many parents didn’t want their child to play the game. Growing up, I didn’t know much about video games, so I wasn’t really into them until I started playing Call of Duty. Not only does it have military based features, it also has zombies and/or aliens features as well.
