Gabriel Westbay grew up in a middle class family in Queens, New York. He attends New York University and is studying to become a neurologist. Gabriel believes that he can change the lives of people who are diagnosed with brain cancer. His inspiration to becoming a neurologist developed after losing his grandparents to brain cancer. His mom is currently battling brain cancer which causes Gabriel to work arduously to keep her alive. Gabriel wants to work with other doctors to develop strategic ways to help patients who are diagnosed with brain cancer. His parents advised him to take a neurological exam to understand the inheritance of brain cancer within his family. He lives a nomadic lifestyle on the streets begging for food and money. He sleeps on public facilities such as benches, trains, pavements, libraries, restaurants, and parks. With little clothes, blankets, and pillows that he brought to Maryland, he uses as vital compartments to help him stay clean and warm. Gabriel transitions on a regular basis to different public facilities every day to sleep. Wherever he sees other homeless people like himself he gathers his belongings and stays there. He did not like sleeping all by himself in a public facilities because he does not want to be seen by the police. He visits the library very often to use its computers and public restrooms if he needed to keep himself intact. Gabriel did not want to become a smelly homeless person that everyone was scared of so he took care of himself. Gabriel made some friends who were similar to him and became adherent to what they were doing. He would follow them to garbage bins to find something to eat or he would look for things on the floor and eat them. He began by going to traincarts, fast food restaurants, or sitting on the pavement to beg someone to give him money. When he was hungry, he visited fast food restaurants and coerced customers to buy him food. He would wait for the manager to give him food to eat and ended up sleeping in fast food restaurants.Once again, Gabriel decided to apply for a job at a fast food restaurant but was denied because of how he was dressed and also the odor that he had. Gabriel needed a job to buy clothes and keep himself clean, so he decided to register himself in a homeless shelter. In the homeless shelter Gabriel was given food to eat and a bathroom to shower. The homeless shelter is partnered with an organization that gives clothes to the homeless in which he found clothes that he could wear. Gabriel was able to find some decent pair of clothes to wear and visited the library to type up his resume. Gabriel was able to acquire a job at a fast food restaurant and was able to get treated for his brain cancer.
