“How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and the fourth wall-TV installed?" If I think of the future of media I remember this quotation from Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”. Will television remain an important part of mass media or will the Internet kill it? What role are mobile devices going to play and what about movies in 2020?
In the following text I am going to answer this questions focusing on television and movies in the near future.
First of all, I would like to go over my expectations of movies in the future:
To my mind after today’s standards - 3D and 4K- movies are going to come to a new level of entertainment. I am not talking about higher resolutions or better surround sound, but about blurring the line between the physical and the digital world. In other words, the move from watching a movie to being part of a movie. I might be wrong but who would not like to play his favorite character in a movie, interact with other characters and affect the movie’s outcome? Motion Pictures have always had a strong influence in today’s culture, but maybe none as prevalent as Star Wars. Originating with Episode 4 A New Hope, the series boomed from 1977 to 2005 with yet another addition coming in 2015. The strongest of the series was the original trilogy episodes 4, 5, and 6, all generally released in the 1980s. As one of the strongest film francaises still today, it’s impact within the 1980s was only the tip of the iceberg. Children and adults alike still anticipate the new edition of this seemingly endless journey. If any singular film series still holds prevalence in its future decades it is Star Wars: Original Trilogy.
Technology and media have become an essential part of our everyday life. It can spark creativity and innovation, but in some cases, it can also lead to destruction. In Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, the dystopian society is destroying itself due to technology and its impacts. The protagonist Guy Montag, realizes this after a fateful encounter with Clarisse McClellan and begins to doubt everything that he has ever known. The ‘idiot box’ (typically known as television) is the leading cause of corruption in the society of Fahrenheit 451 because it is developing at a dangerous rate, it limits human interaction, and it brainwashes minds.

Motion Picture Industry Analysis The motion picture industry is bigger than ever with more stories and storytelling mediums coming into studios. Filmmakers are creatively finding new ways to tell these tales through technology and new talents and bring them to audiences. Although there are many different viewing choices available to audiences, Christopher Dodd, CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, stated, “…cinema remains the premier way to experience the magic of movies” (MPAA, 2016, p. 3, para. 5). Additionally, theater owners are investing in better sounds, screens and special effects to bring these movies to life.

Although the television industry has been around since the late 1800s, it has had to adapt over the years to the changing technological world of its audience. With the amount of piracy on the Internet, it is hard to tell what will be the result of the actions taken by the film industry and motion picture association. There is still much to be discovered, and much to be created. It is up to the filmmakers of tomorrow to decide if they will embrace this newfound marketing tool or go on with the traditions of those before them. But they must realize that the technology will not go away and it will continue to be a part of the industry. The 1990s have been a significant time for film and video. Nineteen ninety-five was the one-hundredth birthday of the movies (Film theory and criticism, 1985).
