As John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, “I look forward to a great future for America - a future in which our country will match its military strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose.” Who knows what the future holds for America. But I personally believe that America has been a strong country when it comes to our Armed Forces. Everybody wants to believe that America will be powerful and great in the future, and if we stay on the same track that we’re on right now, we will be doing fine. We have to have a mindset that the United States will do great things in the future, then we will achieve. This upcoming presidential election will determine what future our military has. It can be anywhere in the United States, or anywhere in the world. In 2010, when Haiti had a tragic earthquake that killed almost 230,000 people and injured about 300,000 people. The United States sent 2,000 marines to help clean up and help everybody affected. There were also 19 helicopters with supplies and anything needed to help Haiti. Plus, when hurricane Katrina hit in August of 2005, 10,000 National Guards were sent to the Gulf Coast to help everybody affected. In 12 hours, they saved 9,000 people from the flooding. The levees in New Orleans were not working correctly, many people in the National Guard risked their lives going out in the flood water to save those who were caught in the flooding. Don’t tread on me. Four simple words. Those four words helped build the strongest country in the world. The land of the free did not rise to the top easily, it took blood sweat and tears. Millions of lives were lost in the process. America would not be the world police if we did not have the strongest military. America’s military is a spear. It has many parts, from the handle to the tip. Without the whole spear, it could not kill. But what part of the spear goes in for the kill first? The tip. The U.S Army is the strongest most respected and feared ground force in the world. It is also the oldest branch of the military and also the largest U.S. Military Service. There are approximately 76,000 officers and 401,000 enlisted members in the active duty Army. The success of the Army lives and dies on themselves and others. The army protects all that the constitution stands for. And each soldier defends this to their last breath with Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Honor, and Personal Courage. As America heads into a new year, we find our government tightening its purse strings and cracking down on excessive spending, with an emphasis on the US military. According to author Brad Plumer, a reporter at the Washington Post, “U.S. defense spending is expected to have risen in 2012, to about $729 billion, and then is set to fall in 2013 to $716 billion, as spending caps start kicking in.” Pared with a more drastic 350 billion dollar cute going into effect over the next ten years, the military finds itself cutting what cost the most to maintain and support troops (Fact Sheet par. 2). The United States of America's military is currently involved in two major wars with U.S. opposition in Afghanistan and Iraq. All though both of these efforts can be said to be in the clean-up stages, many more soldiers will be needed to stabilize the regions, to provide police work, and to fight the insurgencies that have risen in opposition to the invasion of U.S. troops into foreign lands. The current presidential administration states that to adequately deal with the problems of post-war Iraq and unstable Afghanistan the United States needs to increase the number of active-duty soldiers serving over-seas. Top officials in the administration have said that a reorganization of the military is already in progress, and it will create more combat regiments, but the quoted additional 25,000 new military participants needed per year can hardly be met through these minor reorganizations. In addition, recruiting numbers are at their lowest in over ten years (?All Things Considered?, NPR News Source.) Many feel that the reenactment of the military service draft is inevitable because it is the only way to come up with the astounding number of new troops needed to finish the jobs started in the Middle-East by George W. Bush and his Republican administration. If increasing the size of the military is inevitable, then the draft is the wrong way to go. Aside from the moral objections that many Americans have to a draft, there are major logical fallacies in the reasoning that a draft would benefit the military, America, or its interests abroad; therefore, the draft should not be reenacted to increase the number of the United States? combat troops.

The US military can be successful in future wars if it focuses on, trains to, and adapts its force structure to prepare for full spectrum operations. The most likely challenges to US national security interests include international terrorist organizations, transnational criminal organizations, insurgent rebellions and small wars. The most dangerous challenges to US national security interests come from major conventional threats like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China. To overcome these most likely and most dangerous challenges, the US needs to focus its strategic guidance on full spectrum operations, increase training in conventional operations while maintaining current training in irregular operations, and improve the force structure with irregular operation enablers while maintaining its conventional power capabilities.
