When I pick up a novel, I cannot hastily read the story. I must set aside plenty of time because I examine how the author has constructed each sentence. My task is long and arduous, but the time spent is worthwhile. I will also assume each character’s persona while reading the narrative and sometimes imagine I am one of the characters. By doing so, I am no longer reading written words on a page. I am giving life, emotion, and substance to each character. I will begin to feel each character’s happiness or sorrow; each character is now a part of me. Once I am finally finished reading a novel, I will feel emotionally drained and the characters are real people who have let me share their experiences—my reading process is why I chose to be a literature and writing student while also influencing me to further my education in this field.
Although I entered my college career without a definitive direction, after I submitted my first literary research assignment, I realized I wanted to continue studying English composition and writing. Through hard work and dedication, I achieved my first educational goal of earning my Bachelor’s in Literature and Writing and now inspire to earn my master’s degree in the same field of study. While in the master’s program, my educational goals include furthering my studies regarding issues of identity in multicultural literature, focusing on contemporary novels. Moreover, one of my research interests is the relationship between gender roles and prevailing social ideals in early British literature, with emphasis on Shakespearean works. The purpose of Baker’s essay and its placement in The Prentice Hall Guide for College Writers is to encourage young writers to realize that writing truly is a privilege. It is also placed in the book to show college English students that writing does not have to be a grim task and that thinking of it in that manner will only make the student average.
There are many different types of characters in stories, and each has been described differently leaving different impression to readers. Reading some stories gives the readers the feeling of empathy for characters. Speaking about characteristic, it is great to know how a character feels in order to understand the story. Through this essay, I would like to show how stories make the readers feel empathy to other’s concerns, feelings, and troubles.
Since the emergence of literature, thousands upon thousands of characters have graced our imaginations. From trouble maker Bart Simpson of the celebrated cartoon television series The Simpsons to Mr. Darcy of Jane Austen’s renowned novel Pride and Prejudice, the world has witnessed a plethora of characters in literature. Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, and Billy Collins, distinguished American poet, as well as countless other authors, share the utilization of characters in their literary works. The manner in which these authors use the literary element of characters varies immensely.
There is a famous expression about three demands of writing fiction. It goes, “Make them laugh, make them cry, make them wait.” By following these needs, an author can spark interest in his or her work. In the novels The Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Rings, the novelists utilize the latter requirement, “Make them wait.” This essay will show how the authors use that specific demand in their novels.
In a world dominated by technology, reading novels has become dull. Instead of immersing into books, we choose to listen to Justin Bieber’s new songs and to scroll through Instagram posts. Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
Throughout previous class periods in English, I’ve encountered a lot of class discussion about gender role in the recent units we’ve read. Since the beginning of the era when gender quality came upon there has always been an issue. These problems people face have been expressed in their daily living. Several authors such as Eveline, Charlotte Gilman, Virginia Woolf, and Mary Leapor have well-known writings on gender issues. In their writings, they express how they felt about the issues of the gender and what they’ve experienced while being held to an expectation.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.

From reading Alice in Wonderland to now, I have grown to appreciate literature much more. At the beginning of the year, I read purely because it was assigned for me to read, and I only read for important events and story plots.
