Furthering My Education At California State University San Marcos

When I pick up a novel, I cannot hastily read the story. I must set aside plenty of time because I examine how the author has constructed each sentence. My task is long and arduous, but the time spent is worthwhile. I will also assume each character’s persona while reading the narrative and sometimes imagine I am one of the characters. By doing so, I am no longer reading written words on a page. I am giving life, emotion, and substance to each character. I will begin to feel each character’s happiness or sorrow; each character is now a part of me. Once I am finally finished reading a novel, I will feel emotionally drained and the characters are real people who have let me share their experiences—my reading process is why I chose to be a literature and writing student while also influencing me to further my education in this field.

Although I entered my college career without a definitive direction, after I submitted my first literary research assignment, I realized I wanted to continue studying English composition and writing. Through hard work and dedication, I achieved my first educational goal of earning my Bachelor’s in Literature and Writing and now inspire to earn my master’s degree in the same field of study. While in the master’s program, my educational goals include furthering my studies regarding issues of identity in multicultural literature, focusing on contemporary novels. Moreover, one of my research interests is the relationship between gender roles and prevailing social ideals in early British literature, with emphasis on Shakespearean works. I believe that my undergraduate work coupled with the knowledge I acquired in my linguistics and educational courses have substantially prepared me to succeed in the master’s program at California State University San Marcos. Moreover, I strongly believe once I have completed the Master of Arts in Literature and Writing Studies program, I will be better equipped with the necessary tools to teach literary and writing courses at the community and junior college level.
