Functional Assessment The functional family assessment shows how individuals behave in relation to one another. It shows the in-the-moment aspect of a family’s life. There are two basic aspects of family functioning: instrumental and expressive (Wright and Leahey, 2013). Instrumental Functioning Instrumental functioning of the family shows the routine activities of daily living. This area is important for families with health problems in particular (Wright and Leahey, 2013). The father, DM, wakes up around five thirty in the morning to be to work by seven o’clock. DM eats three meals a day, two at the hospital and one at home with his family. DM exhibits a regular routine with working every day during the week. Hours vary with DM depending …show more content…
EM eats three meals per day and has a regular schedule of going to school five days per week. On the weekend, EM participates in family activities that CM and DM plan for the family. He goes to friends’ houses and enjoys helping DM when it comes to anything and everything he does around the house. EM goes to bed between 6pm and 7pm and does not regularly take any medication. The middle son, JM, wakes up around 6:15am when CM wakes up his older brother. JM goes to preschool three times per week for a half day at the local Lutheran church that the family is part of. JM eats three meals per day and has a regular schedule. On the weekends JM also participates in family activities. JM goes to bed with EM between 6pm and 7pm each night and does not regularly take any medication. The youngest daughter, AM, wakes up once through the night and is normally up between 5:30am and 6am and then takes a long nap around ten in the morning and short naps throughout the day. AM is still breast-feeding and has not yet been introduced to food. AM is currently cutting teeth so she is abnormally grumpy and does not take any medications regularly. This is another strength of the family. They are optimists and always think about the positive aspects of every situation. The most evident weakness is the busyness. DM isn’t home often and it puts more stress on CM to do everything for the family. CM does all of the day-to-day chores while still caring for all of their children during the weekdays when DM isn’t home. This isn’t easy on DM to not be home as often as he is. He, from time to time, feels like his is missing out on a lot of the things happening in his life. Another weakness is that the parenting is mostly left up to the mother. This cannot only be stressful for both parents but also stressful for the children. Not having help from extended family is also a weakness for the M family. They get a large amount of help from their nanny and they close friend group but not having the family help with the children is hard. When family helps out with children, it is not only easier on the parents but it also promotes a bond between the children and those members of the
In the textbook, Exceptional Learners: An Introduction to Special Education by Daniel Hallahan, James Kauffman, and Paige Pullen, chapter four discusses the parents and families of exceptional children. At first the chapter discusses the stages parents go through when they have a newborn that has a serious physical disability. The stages that the parents go through are shock, disruption, denial, sadness, anxiety, fear, anger, and adaption. The chapter then goes into talk about the support systems that parents need to have to keep their lives less stressful. The authors stated, “extended family members can often play a critical role in providing comfort and support to the immediate family” (Hallahan, Kauffman, Pullen, 2015, p. 69) Once the chapter talked about this they went into detail the factors that can cause stress for parents. After that the chapter talks about the siblings reactions to their
According to Dyk, the family life has become complicated because of a number of stressors. These stressors include the difficulties that people face on a daily basis, in shape of physical, emotional and psychological needs. Moreover, while families have to maintain social relationships,
Each person in the family starts to develop a job or rule that that play in the family that others can’t really fill. For example Jeannette and Brain’s relationship with each other are almost stronger than anyone in the family. The role that Brain plays is the one that is extremely quiet unless with his family and even though he is a younger sibling he sees it as his goal to protect Jeannette, even if it evolves fighting older bigger girls but if it’s for his family he will do it. Lori is always lost in a book but he is like the mother of the family even though their real mother is around. Their father is bright man that the kids get to see from time to time but then there alcoholic father appears and that’s when problems arise. When it comes to functioning at younger ages they were almost completely dependent on their parents like all kids are, as they started to reach teenage they started to rely less on their parents and more on each other. They started to get their own jobs, when they needed resources they would rather depend on each other or themselves. The communication was free for the kids if they had a question or a problem they would voice their concerns but the only time they didn’t was when they saw that their father was drinking or was drunk. They left the
Consequently due to the lack of leadership and good example from the parents the children consequently imitate their parents. When in a family there is not a good role model and a lack of hierarchy will promote difficulty forming a healthy family system, all that stress disorganizes and prevent proper operation.
Garris (2006) states in the article regarding to the role family, which illustrates my family system. Family system has a significant impact on family members. I reviewed the members of my family. Each one had a particular role, one became very “helpful”, and the others became very “helpless”. For example, I have a brother who was a “silence helper” and was very industrious. Every time my mom or dad needed him for help, naturally they called him. They forgot that he was not there or not available in that moment. Even when he went to the church, or the school the teachers or the church members always asked him for help. In contrast, another brother loved to rely on my good helper brother even until now. According to the article it states, “There is usually a peacemaker, a clown, a rescuer...
Furthermore, the structural family therapy are theories and techniques method for individuals to help them in their social and relational relationships (Vetere, 2001). Additionally, the definition of structure is organizational characteristics of families at any given time, the family subsystems, and open and concealed rules that effect interpersonal decisions and behaviors in the family (Vetere, 2001).

Family is made up of both strengths and stresses. Families cannot have one of these factors without the other. Even the most dysfunctional families have some strengths that keep them united, while the most united families have some stress. Let’s take the Kardashian for example. When Kim Kardashian West was robbed of her jewelry worth nearly 9 million dollars, while that’s a big stress how her husband Kanye West reacted and walked off the stage in the middle of concert in Queen to check on her when he heard his wife has been robbed is a strength, it shows how they have a bond that could last.
This construct can be seen through their relationship since they have a harder time in agreeing with one another and working through their personal problems of anxiety, helplessness, want of au-tonomy and responsibility. With that being understood, their disagreements can exclude Wilma since the main concern of the family’s dysfunction does not truly involve her. Wilma’s presence becomes extremely needed when tensions arises. I believe that Fred, Wilma, and Rose have clear, but also somewhat unclear boundaries within their family system. Unclear boundaries are prevalent with Fred and Rose. The physical and emotional separateness to ensure effective family functioning becomes difficult when Rose and Fred cannot agree or understand why Rose may inflict self-harm, why she is not fond of the rules, and how Fred’s guilt can hinder his
Friedman Family Assessment Method is a very helpful tool for assessing a family. It assesses the social, spiritual, physical, and psychological, among other aspects of a family. Analysis of the assessment data using the Friedman model, allow nurses to develop a plan to improve family health and to live a healthy life. The assessment of the Smith’ family was a great experience as it exposes one to different aspects of community health.
