Increasing fuel consumption and environmental issues have recently forced people to discover new paths to produce fuels from renewable resources. This is often achieved by using submerged-state fermentation with microorganisms. As an alternative, solid-state fermentation offers some advantages over submerged state fermentation.
The article aims to study the solid-state fermentation and to compare it with submerged-state fermentation, in terms of the ability to produce biomass-based fuels. This objective was achieved by using bacteria Clostridium phytofermentans to convert switchgrass into fermentation products, such as ethanol, acetate and hydrogen (H¬2) under both fermentation conditions. Further experiments were conducted under so-lid-state fermentation to observe the effect of pH and moisture content on some variables, such as con-version of xylan and glucan, concentration and the amount of produced ethanol, acetate and H2. The authors concluded that solid-state fermentation may serve as an economical alternative to submerged-state fermentation.
The authors clearly explained the background and the objective of this study in the introduction section, which is a good and standard practice of writing a scientific article.
