‘Free’ Fitness in the fitness center instead of a typical Gym classes
Only 19 percent of all high school students are physically active for 20 minutes or more, five days a week, in physical education classes (insert in text-citation). But why does physical education classes have to be like this? non-enjoyable for the students? hardly physical enough? as well as an environment that's not stress relieving nor confidence building? As a grade nine student that has been at Havergal College for 2 years i have to admit i do enjoy having a class where it's not all school-work based, and a class where we don't have to where our daily uniform. However, i feel it would be better in a physical perspective, and more appealing to the students if girls were able to do 'free' physical fitness in the fitness center for gym class instead of planned lessons and games. Of course you would think what fun is sweating, and having a red face after work-outs in the fitness center compared to playing a friendly, non-tiring game of dodgeball? However, i've realized maybe the challenge itself is not the fun part but the the proud feeling afterwards is. I propose that all gym classes should be substituted for free fitness classes in the fitness center for at least an hour every other day during a school week because gym class lacks amusant, free fitness will relieve stress, and it will build a teenage girls confidence.

The gym is a place where a typical American college student goes to work out their bodies. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
Who doesn’t want to have to do exercise? Everybody needs exercise to be in good health, but some people don’t like to exercise. They just want to stay inside and do nothing in life. Even though people don’t want to exercise all the time they could have a treadmill or a bike to exercise on instead of going outside and running or play basketball with friends just to lose weight. This paper examines the issues associated to the disengagement of students in the health and physical education domain. Typically traditional curriculums have shown to foster anxiety and create undesirable competition amongst students through fitness testing. It is critical to understand the reasons behind the issues of why students are disengaging in the participation of physical education, as the sedentary behavior is becoming a major factor in the obesity epidemic.
For the first time in years, schools are considering imposing an extra mandatory class on students with the hopes of solving a deadly problem; however, it could be causing more problems rather than diminishing it. A statistic recently released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, has stated that in America, 31.3% of 10-17 year olds are either obese or overweight. To combat this issue, The President’s Council on Physical Fitness has introduced a proposal that would require every high school in the United States to have a daily and mandatory physical education class in order to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Very few states require P.E. daily for high school students; however, many states are considering adopting the proposal. Doing so seemed like a great way to combat the growing problem until I thoroughly researched the topic and found that the negatives outweighed the possible positives. Calvin Christian adopting the proposal created by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness regarding mandatory daily P.E. classes would be a huge mistake due to the negative effect on student’s physical and emotional health, the likelihood of an increased budget, and the possible cut of valued classes.
Incontrovertible, physical education programs are getting more attention in the last few years. They are the key to increase teenager’s physical activity levels. Moreover, there are many benefits in the physical education than just having fun, it sharpen overall cognitive abilities and motor skills via athletics. However, what those classes are really trying to promote is the inclusion of a regular fitness activity in our daily routine. Meanwhile, regular fitness activities are “Active living” day-to-day activities, for example, treadmill walking, bike riding and basic daily activities; that is what our parents and ancestors have been doing for most of their lives. These kinds of activities are what our students are not engaging in; rather they are more likely to engage in sedentary activities from playing video games and watching television (The University of Waterloo, 2009). This will, in the long term, increase the risk of virulent diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and even cancer. Physical education should be a fun class, but fun does not have to mean chaos. I believe in a structure that will allow the students to have fun in a safe way. My lesson plans will be structured so that students are constantly engaged in physical activity. I feel that if I can keep students moving and learning, then the chances of misbehavior will decrease. In elementary school I feel that Instant Activities should be used to get students moving when they get into my class. High school is a little different. I feel that students at the secondary school level should be introduced physical fitness activities that will help keep them in shape later on in life.
The article in Idaho State Journal titled, Teacher Defends I.F. elementary school P.E. class: State Proposal to mandate 60 minutes of gym per week, states, “…gym classes aren’t just lessons in basketball, aerobics, or even body sculpting. They’re lessons in life.”
Every day we are seeing how the population in our society acquires really bad habits that risk their health. Obesity has become an issue touching everybody’s life. People are wondering what the solution of the problem might be, and a good amount of them think that the only way to stop this increasing problem is to fight it from childhood. One of the ways to keep children from getting obese is by making them do sports. Some people are convinced that forcing children to take gym class is the magical way that will help children to stay healthy and in good spirits. I agree with the fact that children should be involved in activities that make them exercise. However, I think that even if children should get some kind of physical activity everyday, they shouldn’t be forced to take gym class since it encourages other kids to intimidate the ones that aren’t perfect looking and bully the ones that aren’t talented at sports.

I can not say it enough, we need a longer gym class. I also think if you would extend the gym class you should also take kids phones away. When the class starts to avoid them being on the phone the whole class, because that would defeat the whole purpose of extending the class. I believe this idea is a win win for
Opposition of mandatory Physical Education in high schools believe that if a student has not developed a desire for voluntary physical exercise by the time he or she reaches high school , he or she may not ever (Eberhardt). It is true that individuals should not be forced into something they don’t want to participate in, but if these students don’t get any exercise outside of school, where will they receive an appropriate amount of fitness? Paul Eberhardt, athletic director, intramural director and head coach of the McNair Marlins basketball team in Richmond, B.C., believes “that students don’t care about participating in P.E. anymore and we have to educate students on the benefits of Physical Education”. In the 1994-1995 school year there were 1,133 students enrolled at McNair High School but there were only four P.E. classes available, which meant approximately 120 students attended in these classes. The remaining 1013 grade eleven and twelve students had no Physical Education at all. This is an astonishing figure. “Many students participate in sports and recreation activities outside of school, but most of them get hardly any exercise at all.
Exercising and eating healthy foods can benefit people physically, mentally, and emotionally. Regular participation in physical activities has been associated with a longer and better quality of life, reduced risks of a variety of diseases and many psychological and emotional benefits (Dhuruo, 2012). Physical activity is a useful mechanism in the prevention of sedentary behavior, overweight, obesity and it plays a key role in health promotion (Dhuruo, 2012). Exercising and changing life styles can help with stress and other health problems. Dhuruo (2012) found that physical activity participation diverts one's mind from stress, provides one with a positive outlook of life and impacts positively on work-related stress. This literature review looks at the benefits of exercising and how it decreases stress.
Exercise lowers symptoms for stress related illnesses. As people start to perform cardio, their stress levels start to relieve and evolves into a sense of control over their body and life. Once the body learns how to rest, it makes it easier for mind control to take place. Instead of being so overworked over certain feelings, it becomes simpler to think things through. Unfortunately, about forty percent of adults undergo health consequences due to stress (WebMD). This number wouldn’t have been so high if the patients participated in physical activities, such as running, from a young age. Many don’t realize that the small investment they make determines a portion of their future. Remaining physically inactive can serve to be a disservice to one’s body and mind. Physical Education classes, also known as P.E., phys. ed., or just “gym” classes, are not something many people enjoy. Some people have pretty horrific memories from Middle School, Junior High and/or High School. So, it might not be something students want to repeat during the college experience. That said, there are more than two sides on whether physical education classes should be made mandatory every semester for college students. One side is that they shouldn’t be made mandatory for any college student, any semester. Corollarily physical education classes should be made mandatory for every college student, every semester. Other sides are; some degrees which have a high amount of physical activity should be the only ones required to have physical education classes mandatorily every semester or that physical education classes should be made mandatory, but not ever semester and not for every degree. This essay will focus mainly on the pros and cons of whether mandatory physical education classes should be required for every student, every semester.
Life is full of troubles, demands, pressures and hassles—these are all factors related to stress. Stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or difficult situations (Merriam-Webster). When you are in potential danger, your body responds with a “fight-or-flight” response to protect you from any harm. Situations like being robbed at gunpoint or studying last minute the night before the test can activate stress in your body. Although situations in life can increase stress, there are plenty of methods to diminish it. Methods like meditating, talking to family/friends, drinking tea, or even taking a quick nap--all of these methods are proven effective (The Franklin Institute). One method that is prominent to many is physical exercise. Exercise is considered to improve physical conditions and strength, but maintains mental fitness in the process. Although many assume that exercising is healthy, some may not be familiar of how it relieves stress in detail. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise, the pros and cons must be considered. Some pros are: managing the levels of stress in your body, boosting your self-esteem, and improving learning and memory. The cons are: being time consuming and tedious, being costly and expensive, and risking injury while exercising. Let’s look at the pros of physical activity.
