JPMorgan Chase is one of the oldest financial functioning financial institutions in America today, dating back to over 200 years ago. JPMorgan Chase is currently the largest bank in the United States with estimated total assets being equal to $2.5 trillion. They have branches in over 60 countries and employ upwards of 260,000 employees. The company was founded in 2000, when Chase Manhattan Corporation and J.P. Morgan & Co. merged together. However the Chase Manhattan Corporation was formed in 1995 when the Bank of Manhattan Company bought out the Chase National Bank. The Bank of Manhattan Company however was established in 1799, giving JPMorgan Chase roots back to the late 18th century.
JPMorgan Chase is the result of the joining and buying out of over 1200 predecessor institutions, the most important of which include J.P. Morgan, Chase Manhattan, Chemical, Manufacturers Hanover and National Bank of Detroit. Since JP Morgan & Company and Chase Manhattan Corporation have joined together they have become very successful, even considered the largest bank in America by some.
However...
This bank held government money and controlled the economy by making it easier for local banks to borrow money from it to loan it to manufacturers and factories. As the idea arose the cabinet, Jefferson protested that such a bank was unconstitutional because it favored the north over the south since the bank did not loan money to farmers for land expansions. Being true as it is, the bank drastically boosted our economy and had a great future for our nation. Since it was unconstitutional, a compromise said that the bank would only be funded for 20 years. So as soon as Andrew Jackson was elected, he destroyed the bank. In response to this, our nation suddenly falls into a major depression. No one had jobs and the economy was dying. This showed the brilliance of the national bank and how much it helped our economy. Adding onto this, the bank began the formation of the Federalist and Democratic
It all started during 2006 when the US Justice Department came up with discovery of meeting of JP Morgan Executives where despite of red flag signals from US department, the officials continued selling shoody mortgage securities. JP Morgan- one of the largets banks in US, came to mutual agreement with US Government Officials to pay $13 billion as part of civil settlement against charges over JP Morgan. (Barrett, 2013). The record penalty was the result of investigation held by Securities and Exchange Council and US Justice Department where they found that the big national banks were responsible for fueling the financial crisis. As for JP Morgan, where they acknowledged that indeed it told its investors about the mortgage loans in securities it packaged and sold although they were told by its employees of its loan quality, this gives a valid proof that national banks were indeed responsible for mortgage meltdown. However, these criminal charges on JP Morgan had both pros and cons in its own sense for the financial world and big banks.
Morgan first began working for his father until he started his own private banking company. His company was called J.P. Morgan & Co. His company ended up becoming one of the most leading financial firms in the country. He helped financial markets during many economic crises. With his popularity, he faced some criticism saying that he had too much power and some were afraid he was creating a monopoly. He contributed greatly to the helping the railroads and “... controlled an estimated one sixth of America’s rail lines”(history.com staff). He helped get Wall Street out of the 1907 financial crisis. Eventually the journalists, politicians, and other people, came to the realization that he could “... manipulate the financial system for his own gain.”(history.com staff) This led to the Pujo Committee Hearings which were about a money trust being investigated.
The Bank of the United States is a symbol of the long held American fear of centralization and government control. The bank was an attempt to bring some stability and control and was successful at doing this. However, both times the bank was chartered, forces within the economy ultimately destroyed it. The fear of centralization and control was ultimately detrimental to the U.S. economy.
By doing so, the organization can understand its competitive environment and create a strategic plan to succeed. Within an industry there may be several competitors that provide similar products and services. Within the financial services industry, competitors or Wells Fargo & Co. would be other banking institutions such as JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. Because Wells Fargo offers a wide variety of products and services, its competitors may also include specialized firms such as Scottrade, e-Trade, Quicken Loans, and Loan Depot which specialize in specific products such as investment banking and mortgage products. Rivalry among these competitors is a positive factor for the consumer because each organization will focus on the activities of its competitors to provide superior service to its
Wells Fargo account fraud scandal One of the most recent white-collar crimes involved Wells Fargo, a banking and financial services provider. In 2016, San Francisco-based bank Wells Fargo (WFC) employees secretly created millions of unauthorized bank and credit card accounts without permission of their customers. Opening about 1.5 million fraudulent deposit accounts and submitting 565,443 credit card applications allowed Wells Fargo employees to boost their sales targets and receive bonuses. Consequently, customers were wrongly charged fees for accounts they did not know existed. In this business crime scenario, Wells Fargo is involved in paying $185 million in fines and refunding $5 million to affected customers.
JPMorgan Chase is one of the largest and best known banks in the banking industry. JP Morgan Chase is a global financial service firm with operations in over 50 countries. With a CEO who is known as one of the banking industries top leaders it is obvious why they are in the top 10 of the fortune 500. Although JP Morgan Chase bank is one of the leaders in the industry I believe they are a long way away from being the most innovative bank around. Banks can be one of the most targeted locations for robberies which is why I find it important for them to protect their customers and themselves. Utilizing computerized bankers would be a good start to safety within their branches. Money should not be kept on the floor of any bank to avoid unnecessary situations.
The United States government in 1816 chartered the Second Bank of the United States. It had a 20-year charter, which was to expire in 1836. Despite this, the Bank was privately owned and during the age of Jackson, the president was Nicholas Biddle. The Bank was large in comparison to other banks, being responsible for 15-20% of bank loans in the United States and accounting for 40% of the bank notes in circulation. Also, the Bank held a specie reserve of 50% of the value of its notes, when normally other banks only had a specie reserve of 10-25% (Davis 1).
Santander Bank, N.A. is one of the largest retail banks in the United States by deposits. Its main corporate offices are in Boston and it operates principally in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
John Pierpont Morgan is considered one of the founding fathers of the modern United States economy. He was an industrial genius that is accredited with the founding of many companies including General Electric and AT&T. However, Pierpont is looked upon as a saint and demon the same. He received a honorary degree from Harvard university that read: "Public citizen, patron of literature and art, prince among merchants, who by his skill, wisdom and courage, has twice in times of stress repelled a national danger of financial panic." But Robert LaFollette, the Wisconsin progressive, saw him as "a beefy, red-faced thick-necked financial bully, drunk with wealth and power." Despite conflicting opinion on his persona, his influence and character shaped the business world more so than any other person at the turn of the century. Morgan was a banker, railroad czar, industrialist, financier, philanthropist, yachtsman, and ladies' man. He was king to a handful of millionaire barons who controlled the country's wealth in an era of little government regulation.
In 2015, Wells Fargo was named as the world’s most valuable bank being worth around 2 trillion dollars (Fortune, 2015). Wells Fargo started out of San Francisco with growth in the right direction for the U.S. economy. They are a financial services company that has banking, insurance, investments, mortgage, and consumer and commercial finance through 8,700 locations, 13,000 ATMs, the internet (Securities and Exchange Commission, 2015). With Wells Fargo progressing and gaining prosperity, it is a shame that they took a negative method to get to this point. The Wells Fargo scandal has caused many to look at the company poorly. They have lost copious clients due to their bad ethical misconduct and not treating customers with respect following
The Bank of America, the second largest bank holding company in the United States by assets after JP Morgan Chase (Forbes, 2013) was originally founded in 1904 as the Bank of Italy. The Bank of America is now a multinational and financial services corporations with its headquarters located in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1998 North Carolina National Bank started a series of acquisitions of several banks (including the Bank of America in 1998). The newly-merged bank took the name Bank of America and maintained its headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina (Bank of America: Our Heritage, 2014). In the 2000s. Bank of America continued to expand with the acquisition of FleetBoston (2004), MBNA (2006), investment management company U.S. Trust (2007), mortgage company Countrywide (2008), and Merryl Lynch in 2009 (Gupta & Herman, 2012).
Visa and MasterCard are non-stock, not for profit membership corporations owned by thousands of diverse financial institutions (i.e.- banks, credit unions etc.). The Visa association was formed by a group of American banks in the late 1960’s to assist its members in issuing general-purpose payment cards and signing merchants to accept those cards (Allen, 2000, 2). Visa and MasterCard are considered to be an “open” or joint venture relationship with each other and their association members. In essence, this means any financial institution may join the Visa and MasterCard associations assuming they can meet certain capital adequacy requirements, and comply with certain association rules. In return, Visa and MasterCard provide essential functions to the member banks. They license their members to issue Visa and MasterCard branded credit and debit cards, sign members to accept those cards, market the cards to ensure brand recognition, develop new card products and services, and provide an infrastructure of communications, processing, authorization, and settlement functions necessary for the system to operate. Together Visa and MasterCard account for almost 80% of the overall market share in the credit card industry.
