Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the greatest men to ever grace American soil. In November of 1932, FDR became the 32nd president of the United States. While in office, FDR did some truly incredible things. He guided the American people through our great depression, which is truly something to be said. He also guided the American people through the attack of Pearl Harbor. Even throughout this horrific disaster FDR remained a calm leader and brought us confidence. Also, you must keep in mind that President Roosevelt was doing all of these things while also fighting a personal battle; the battle of dealing with disease. Throughout this Essay, I will talk about the great workings of FDR as a president and civilian while also giving some background information on his life. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park New York. He was born into one of the wealthiest families in the state of New York. Because of this, he was given many more opportunities than the average person. Although his family is known well for their workings in politics, his first cousin, Ellen Roosevelt was the 1890s women’s tennis singles and doubles champion and is also a member of the international tennis hall of fame. But, back to FDR. Franklin Delano Roosevelt attended an Episcopal boarding school in Massachusetts. While there, he was greatly influenced by the headmaster Endicott Peabody who urged the students to enter public service. He then went to Harvard. While at Harvard, his fifth cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, became president. FDR greatly admired his cousin whose vigorous leadership made him Franklin’s role model. FDR met his future wife, Eleanor Roosevelt in 1902 at a white house reception. They got married on March 17th ... ... middle of paper ... ... a peacekeeping organization on victory. After this, Roosevelt planned for an invasion of Europe and North Africa. In 1942, North Africa was invaded. In 1943, Sicily and Italy. And on June 6, 1944, the invasion of Normandy on D-day. By 1945, victory in Europe was almost certain. The stresses of war literally wore Roosevelt out. On April 12 1945, while on vacation in warm springs Georgia, Roosevelt suffered a massive stroke in which he died 30 minutes later. He was 63 years old. Ironically, his death was on the day America gained a complete military victory in Europe. He was buried where he grew up, Hyde Park New York. Throughout this essay, you have seen that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was truly a great man of courage and strength. He also remained very calm in the times of hardship and struggle. Without FDR, America would surely not be the same as it is today.
