What would you do if your love faces the most difficult choice that makes your life change? Would you sacrifice your love for your lover who will marry other people to escape the death, or would you just let him die because of your jealousy? In the myth “The Lady or the Tiger?” Frank R. Stockton tells the story about the feudal dynasty with a contradictory justice system based on the king’s decision. The king is compassionate and patriotic; however, there is another side of him who has opposite behavior, which is barbarous to whom dare to disobey his order. The king expected that his daughter, the pretty princess will marry an aristocratic; nonetheless, he found out that the princess is in love with a commoner. The king was very angry, so he ordered to put the princess’s lover in jail and entered the arena for trial. The princess faces an impasse situation, whether she lets her lover to be married to a beautiful lady that he has never met before, or lets him die and be eaten by the ferocious and famished tiger. There are two different judgments that represent awards and chastisement, which are hiding behind the two doors that were covered, and nobody knows what will happen after the criminal opens the doors. Once the criminal decides to open the doors, there will be a beautiful lady appears with a band of chorister and dancing to celebrate the wedding ceremony for the innocent with the lady, which means he will be freed and have a new life with his new wife, regardless whether he is married or not. Otherwise, the other door will be opened with a starveling and brutal tiger, which is waiting to tear the criminal to pieces. Because of the blind love, the princess may choose the wrong decision; however, the flame of her love is too strong enough that makes the princess saves her lover. Dispose of jealousy, selfishness, and self-sufficiency, the princess directs her lover to the right door, where the lady is waiting for him and the bands will celebrate for their wedding ceremony. In addition, with all the confidence in the princess, the lover follows her gesture to reach to the right door with no doubt. The magic of heart’s reason makes the princess saves her lover despite he will marry other lady. The only reason that makes the princess happy is that her lover can be alive regardless of where he lives; her heart will follow him because of their love will never-ending. “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than you own.” (Brow Jr.).
