Have you ever been to Hell? No one is quite sure how far underground you have to go to get there or what you have to do to be sent there, but no one truly wants to go. Fracking might be putting people closer to Hell than the government thinks. Fracking can cause harm to people, animals, and nature. When they drill into the ground they are pumping chemicals to extract the gas and oil, and this contaminates the water sources around it. “An editorial on gas extraction from the Marcellus Shale in the Post-Star, a newspaper in Glens Falls, New York, contends, “New York state simply can’t take the risk. In my opinion it should not be allowed to be so close to homes and farm lands. People are getting sick and are not able to drink the water that they have to wash their skin and cook with. Many families have had to leave their home towns to get away from the dangers of what fracking brings. “These … chemical compounds such as benzene, xylene and toluene, which have been found to have detrimental health effects – such as respiratory problems and birth defects” (Naveena). There are thousands of jobs on farms and in factories, we don’t need people digging and pumping chemicals into the earth. This is the best example of utilitarianism. According to Lesson 3, Utilitarianism is the right thing to do is whatever would have the best overall consequences. How can the government think that this is helping people? People are dying and being put in the hospital from chemicals in the water and air that only appeared once they began fracking in the area. The ethical theory utilitarianism suggests that human welfare is extremely important according to Lesson 3. These people are not worried for these families lives they are interested in revenue from what they are pulling out of the
