In the book, Shattered, the book is about a teen who begins to mature as he ages. The main character is starting to become more mature after he gets a placement at a soup kitchen. He starts to realise that there are many problems going on in the society. There are many types of conflicts that are going on around him. The four types of conflicts going on in the book are Human vs. Society, Human vs. Self, Human vs. Human and Human vs. Self. The one conflict that is really making this story apparent is Human vs. Society due to the Rwandan genocide. The Human vs. Self, Human vs. Human, Human vs. Self are the other conflicts that are making this story interesting after the Human vs. Society conflict.
To Begin, the first type of conflict going in the book, Shattered, is Human vs. Society. The individual involved is Ian, he is taking a stand and is fighting against society for all of the people living on the streets which have been treated like garbage. This conflict is due to poverty and the lack of respect for the people living on the streets. The society has no respect for people on the streets and consider them nothing other than garbage. This conflict relates to social justice because of the high poverty numbers, and injustice. Poverty is a very big social justice problem as it occurs almost everywhere in the world. I think the conflict would be resolved when Ian's voice reaches the government and they decide to take action. The government will need to stand up and stop the violence against poverty and lack of respect towards people with poverty. I think the conflict will be resolved with the use of government. In conclusion, there all sorts of conflicts that are going on around in this book. The four types of conflicts going on are Human vs. Society, Human vs. Self, Human vs. Human and Human vs. Self. Rwandan genocide, poverty, discrimination, oppression, obstacles, and injustice are the reasons for all of the types of conflicts going on in the book ,Shattered. In the end, there will always be a solution available for every problem.

In Shattered, Eric Walters hauls the reader through the life of Ian, the protagonist who experiences the joy of helping others. Throughout this white pine award novel, Ian continually offers help to people around him reflecting to them that their lives are not perfect and they ought to alter it somewhat. Furthermore, the author effectively compares the significance of family and the importance of acquiring a dream in life. Through the book, Eric Walters demonstrates the theme of compassion through the incidents of Ian helping Jack to overcome his drinking problems, showing Berta the value of patriot and always there for the less fortunate.

Simmel’s theory of conflict may be applied to the residents in “Two Towns of Jasper” because the murder of James Byrd Jr. had created conflict of racism and forced the town to examine their collective identity. The theory of conflict explains conflict as a form of interaction, more beneficial way to bring people in one society together, and a necessary for societal change. The benefits of a conflict are promoting growth in a society, resolving issues, and innovation. “Two Towns of Jasper” demonstrates that the conflict that arises from the murder of James Byrd Jr. brings the citizens of Jasper to recognize the racial differences that are occurring and resolve these issues in order to prevent future problems. Caucasians and African-Americans come together and view the murderers as common enemies which heightened the solidarity among the two groups.

In the story he talks about his experiences as a Jew during the Holocaust. If not already obvious this is a true story. The main conflict is man vs. man. It is more of a general conflict with slave owners versus slaves. Throughout the whole book, the struggles between slaves and their masters are shown. The story explains the harshness of slavery. With both nice and mean slave masters, slavery is terrible and that conflict is shown throughout the whole story.
This book shows that in highly emotional situations you react before thinking. Two soldiers named Strunk and Jensen got into a fight. Strunk stole Jensen’s jackknife. When Jensen found out, he retaliated by breaking Strunk’s nose. This shows that people don 't always think and just react to situations. Also there is irony in this. They both are fighting on the same team in this war, but yet are fighting each other.
The Conflict Perspective, in itself, focuses on the ruling class and the ruled class. In the perspective, the ruling class defines what is deviant based on how it helps them. In this case, the ruling class would be defined as upper-class and white. The ruled class would be defined as lower-class and black. This is illustrated through the emphasis placed on the impact of the differences between the woman who was raped and the young men who were accused of raping her. The woman who was raped was a white and wealthy business woman who worked as an investment banker on Wall Street. The young men who raped her were lower class, black, and from Harlem. Due to these extreme differences, there was immense media attention. The media was often one sided and viewed the young men as criminals and animals in order to make them social pariahs. The media and upper-class wanted to make an example of them to reinforce the laws and separate the two groups even further. Also, the court system had the woman give a testimony despite the fact that she could not remember anything that happened that night. The documentary stated that her testimony was simply used to “pack an emotional punch,” and make the young men look even more inhuman. Finally, when the men were exonerated, the media barely covered it. The news was no longer about showing the lower-class where they belonged. Anything

The book I am reading, laughing at my nightmare by Shane Burcaw, shows three different types of conflict: man vs self, man vs society, and man vs man. Shane, the main character, and author of laughing at my nightmare, deals with struggles with himself and others. Man vs self is defined as an internal conflict that a character overcomes making he/she make their own choices. Man vs society, an external conflict, is where a character strongly believes against a majority of a community or surroundings and decides to act upon it. In other words, man vs society is one against many. Lastly, man vs man is an external conflict with another character.
