In 1916, a Frenchman named Henri Fayol wrote a book entitled Administration Industrielle et General. As a former coal mine director, Fayol had discovered four distinct functions of management he stated were applicable in any industry. Today, these functions are still found in any industry or business in the world.
The four functions of management are Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling. Planning sets the direction a company is going, and how it will accomplish those goals. Planning involves day to day operational issues and well as forecasting the future, and creating plans to deal with uncertainty. With most businesses, planning is constantly updated and improved as necessary in order to create better processes, and improve profit. Managers organize by distributing resources (Human, Physical, and Financial) create responsibility by determining what tasks must be accomplished in order to meet goals, who will perform these tasks, and who will report to whom. Leading requires managers to interact with employees on an interpersonal level, motivating, communicating, and inspiring them. They also must meet the organizations objectives and goals. Controlling is the final of the four functions. Once a plan is set, and all of the organization has been made the manager’s job of controlling comes it to play. Managers monitor activities and ensure they are carried out according to the plan. If the goals are not being met, the manager must identify the issue, and take corrective action to get back on plan. Once the plan has been completed, the manager evaluates the results against the original goals.

This article discusses Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) “The relationship quality between a leader and each of his/her followers” (Marc, et. al., 2012, p. ) and if LMX can be integrated successfully into larger groups, while still maintaining control. LMX requires building and maintaining relationships with employees in the work place. The results of this research were not conclusive, but the authors did find the personality of the leader had a big impact on his or her ability to build and maintain relationships. They suggested an introverted type of leader may use leader development sessions include role play exercises. Having LMX, as well as a span of control is possible, but how large the span could get depends on the individual’s personality and charisma.
