Formal Analysis
The first artwork I chose for the formal analysis project is The Tiger by Ito Jakuchù originally painted in 1755. This painting is of a tiger licking its paw in the grass underneath a tree branch. There seems to be two diagonal planes as the tiger is leaning forward and sitting erect. There is a horizontal plane from what appear to be branches above the tiger. The painting has asymmetrical balance as the elements are equally distributed to balance the top and the bottom of the space. The artwork demonstrates several types of line. There are curved lines used in the tiger’s stripes. There are also diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines used in the background for the grass and the overhanging tree branch. The curved and wavy lines used in the tiger’s body, for example in the shoulder muscles, imply movement in addition to the curve in the tiger’s tail. The Language of Art by Ann Pelo describes the inquiry-based studio practices in early childhood settings. When I started to read chapter six I traced a lot of words ,as going through the few pages I came across this word called “children’s pursuits” at the very beginning of the first question of how do we grow a culture of inquiry (Pelo,2007,p.109) . I choose this word because it is challenging for me during my first practicum placement, illustrates the heart of this chapter and guides me as an Educator to facilitate my learning for future preparation. It literally impacts our learning and pedagogical styles when we recreate art activities for children.
...hese repeated vertical lines contrast firmly with a horizontal line that divides the canvas almost exactly in half. The background, upper portion of the canvas, seems unchanging and flat, whereas the foreground and middle ground of the painting have a lot of depth to them.
The Interpretation/Meaning (III) will be written without any guideline points, the aim of this part will be to determine what the painter wanted to express with his piece of work and what it tells us in a symbolic or not instantly clear way. This part will also handle why the artist drew the painting the way he did it and why he chose various techniques or tools.
The Artwork that I will be analyzing is ‘(blossoming) Autumn sun’ paint in 2006 by Imants Tillers using acrylic, gouache on 54 canvas boards. Imants Tillers is an Australian artist, curator, and a writer who was born in the 1950’s in Sydney. He is also known for painting ‘Conversation with the bride, ‘The Bridge of reversible Destiny, ‘The Letter I, and ‘The Forming of Place.
Many might have been working on Good Friday, but many others were enjoying The Frist Museum of Visual Arts. A museum visitor visited this exhibit on April 14, 2017 early in the morning. The time that was spent at the art museum was approximately two hours and a half. The first impression that one received was that this place was a place of peace and also a place to expand the viewer’s imagination to understand what artists were expressing to the viewers. The viewer was very interested in all the art that was seen ,but there is so much one can absorb. The lighting in the museum was very low and some of the lighting was by direction LED lights. ... study for the overall concept they appear rather as abstract patterns. The shadows of the figures were very carefully modeled. The light- dark contrasts of the shadows make them seem actually real. The spatial quality is only established through the relations between the sizes of the objects. The painting is not based on a geometrical, box like space. The perspective centre is on the right, despite the fact that the composition is laid in rows parallel to the picture frame. At the same time a paradoxical foreshortening from right to left is evident. The girl fishing with the orange dress and her mother are on the same level, that is, actually at equal distance. In its spatial contruction, the painting is also a successful construction, the groups of people sitting in the shade, and who should really be seen from above, are all shown directly from the side. The ideal eye level would actually be on different horizontal lines; first at head height of the standing figures, then of those seated. Seurats methods of combing observations which he collected over two years, corresponds, in its self invented techniques, to a modern lifelike painting rather than an academic history painting.
Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
This painting has deviated from the standard Renaissance model in that it goes beyond depicting subjects and scene, and employs exaggerated form, color emphasis, abnormal planar depiction, and visual directionality. The aspects of this painting have become the embodiment of the story told and the characters there held. The artist has used various techniques of color, line, and juxtaposition in order to portray an idea which supersedes the sum of its parts, and thereby leads the viewer through a thought.
As a little girl, I have always wanted to wield the red, white and blue recognizable costume of a famous heroine. I wanted to wear the tiara with silver metal bracelets and run around, playing with a rope that I would call my “lasso of truth” and immediately state that I was invincible. I, like many other girls, wanted to become the comic book heroine known as Wonder Woman.
The art piece chosen for analyzing in this essay is from Claude Monet, The Windmill on the Onbekende Gracht Amsterdam oil on canvas painting from 1874. Claude Monet was born on November 14 in 1840 in Paris, French, and he death on December 5 in 1926 in Giverny, France. He was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement 's philosophy of expressing one 's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plain air landscape painting. According with the information next to the painting in the museum of art in Houston “on one of his visits to Holland, Monet was intrigued by this charming windmill situated on the small “unknown quayside” in Amsterdam. The mill, built in 1656, produced textile dyes and was demolished in 1876.
“Dance is movement aware of itself. Dance is purposeful movement that employs artful communication to express ideas and feelings, meaning that aesthetic intention is present” (Cornett, 2014, p 394). Art could be anywhere and anything it just needs to have creativity in order to make it unique and beautiful. One simple art form, could speak for a thousand words and convey many significant messages such as the art form of dance. Baile Folklorico is a great example of communicating in a unique and a stunning art form. Baile Folklorico is a folk dance that elaborates different dances, music and costumes to represent a Latin or Mexican culture.
Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson’s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.
In this exquisite artwork named, “The Turning Road”, by Andre Derain, there are many elements of art shows many different type of lines, shape, texture, space, light, and color. This artwork has an automatic drawing that looks random and adventurous. I can see that the two-dimensional of the tree trunk and branches which have the outline of a cylinder and rectangle. There are vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines used to emphasize in this drawing like, the curvy tree trunk and the diagonal branches that stick out of the tree. Also the thin short lines are displayed behind the big thick tree trunk to avoid attention and let us in-version that there are many more enormous tree nearby. The lines were used in the picture to create a tonal variation and simulate texture. “The curving road, the tree trunks and branches, and the choreographed forms of villager all sway to an integrated rhythm”, that focus our attention of how the artist utilized lines to create a freeform way which add excitement to the design. He also applied different colors to shimmer in flat shapes in order to make the landscape come more alive and the expressive feeling of the villagers. The shapes of the house and road have a smooth and rounded angle that appears to be distorted. I don’t see any three-dimensional form that was use in this painting, however, the artist tend to portray a different angles that allow the viewer to see certain things like the trees and curved road to stand out and grab the viewer attention. The shapes used in the painting seem to be organic, because of the naturally outdoor environment and authentic of colors. Today most art education programs are made up of four components. One of these components is art aesthetics. Aesthetics is the study of the nature of a piece of artwork. It analyzes the work by asking specific questions regarding the artist and the piece. The viewer becomes the judge in a sense. It tries to discover what the artwork might be representing. They could also ask what type of emotion the artist was trying to convey in their work. The viewer also takes part in analyzing the physical aspects and characteristics of the work. It focuses on the use of color, sequence and synchrony of an artwork. It notes the artist’s craftsmanship, artistic ability and proficiency in technique (Hoffman 1999).
Through these early stages of art discussed above, it shows how the foundation for today’s modern works was laid out. They show how art has developed from simple cave paintings, to the tremendous force in society that it is today.
