Forensic Nursing: Child Abuse
The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network state that every two minutes, someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. In 2007 there were 248,300 victims of sexual assault (US department of Justice).

I'm 17 now and it has changed me life completely.” (Dancing in the Darkness, “Survivors”).” Forensic Nursing is one of the most promising occupations in the United States, the emergence for the need of nurses in the community benefits the place to make lives better. While a judge and jurors are putting the criminal away, forensic nurses are the ones who approach the victim in a more personal manor. Forensic Nurses in the community make the alleviation of pain and trauma better for patients.

Forensic nurses care for most rape victims and are on staff at hospitals. They help gather evidence from pelvic exams and also support the victim to make sure that they are in stable comfort zone. The nurses gather evidence such as hair, blood, and swabs from different parts of the body (A Helping Hand to Rape Victims). The supplies needed is a rape kit which was developed by Louis R. Vitullo and actually used to be referred to as the Vitullo Kit. After using the rape kit the nurse tells the victim about the risks associated with rape such as pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Because of rape kits, catching and convicting the criminal is a lot easier. Risk assessment is the process of understanding a hazard such that its potential negative impact can be limited. In forensic services, violence risk assessment and management are critical elements of the delivery of services by professionals from various disciplines including psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, and occupational therapy (Hart, 2001; Doyle & Dolan, 2002). These professionals hold an ethical and legal responsibility to prevent or limit future violence by their clients. This serves to ensure not only the safety of the public from violent acts, but also that of healthcare professionals who may be involved in the care of potentially violent individuals, and the clients from self-harmful consequences of violence (Hart & Logan, 2011).
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) play a significant role in providing a complete understanding of to the care of a sexual assault victim. The sexual assault nurse examiner can provide expert testimony in a sexual assault case and they are able to conduct forensic exams. They help with interventions for crisis, treatment, and emotional support. What I would provide is to ensurance that the person know that they are not alone, counseling, and be supportive as possible. I will make sure that rape victim will get to living a normal life and learn how to trust again with giving the support of letting them know they are not

For this study forensic evidence can be considered DNA evidence and/or trace evidence of any kind, included to but not limited to tire tracks, bullet casings, glass shards, fingerprints, and hair samples. Although this study proposes the idea that forensic evidence is more important it currently is not used frequently in the justice system. A study found that out of the cases they examined forensic evidence was collected in 37% of cases but only 18% of those cases were examined (Peterson, Hickman, Strom, Johnson, 2013). Another study found that 38% of participants said forensic evidence was hard to come by while 62% said they had spent time on victim credibility (Menaker, Campbell, Wells, 2016). This shows us that forensic evidence is not used frequently, and more time is spent on making a victim credible instead of finding evidence. It is the purpose of this study to determine if forensic evidence is more important than circumstantial evidence and eye witness testimony. If this can be determined than less time can be spent on things like victim credibility for testimonies, and more time can be spent on analyzing forensic

An average of 237,868 Americans (ages 12+) are sexually assaulted per year. This translates to an american being sexually assaulted every two minutes. This does not even include all of the children who are victims of sexual assault. The government has tried to combat these appallingly high statistics with various pieces of legislature, including Title IX.

It is important for the individual going into this occupation to search out the pros and cons of the different areas of nursing. Sometimes gender plays a part in choosing the specific area of an RN. For instance, the strength of males is needed in areas of physical therapy. While the gentle attributes of women are needed in the care of babies. “A nurse must like people and want to help them, and must also have self-reliance and good judgment, patience, honesty, responsibility, and ability to work easily with others.”(Jacobi). The occupation of a registered nurse includes many advantages such as having the ability to assist your family in medical needs, the salary is attractive and above the average scale, and it offers great job security.

Entertainment media’s fascination with the intersection of crime and psychology has fueled the growing interest in the field. A. Rape is one of the biggest issues women face. Not only is it more likely than you would think, but over 89,000 people are raped annually in the United States. The scariest part is that 95% of rapes are unreported. Out of the reported cases 16% are women. Only 3% are men.
Forensic science plays a vital role in the criminal justice system by aiding an investigator’s case with scientific information based on the analysis of the evidence. Each crime scene is unique in its own way and using the evidence collected, forensic experts try to piece it together. An expert is someone who has had enough education, training, and experience to testify to the matter at hand (Harmon 2010). Unlike other witnesses in a case who testify based on first hand knowledge, the expert witness is not required to have firsthand knowledge of a particular case, and in fact, often does not. Rather, the expert witness testifies to the meaning of the facts (Whitcomb et al. 2005). Each forensic expert typically has a background in another scientific discipline, such as biology, physics, chemistry, etc. An expert with a biology background may work with DNA; chemistry may work in toxicology; and physics in blood spatter trajectories. Working separately on their own respected evidence, an investigator is able to collect all their data and set up a case (National Institute of Justice 2013). Usually, these experts will be hired by either the prosecution or defense in a criminal trial, or by a plaintiff or defendant in a civil litigation. The role of the expert witness exists in variants: between criminal and civil courts as well as the prosecution and defense.
