Forensic anthropology is the application of the anatomical science of anthropology and its different subfields. Some of the forensic anthropology fields include archaeology as well as forensic taphonomy and the subfields are applicable in legal settings. However, forensic anthropologists are important because they identify deceased individuals whose remains are burned, unrecognizable, decomposed or mutilated. Such incidences happen when an accident occurs due to an inferno, road car crash, airplane crash or a fierce war between two or more parties. In addition, forensic anthropologists are instrumental in the investigation as well as the documentation of mass graves and genocides.

The other strength of forensic anthropology is that is includes medical examinations to come up with comprehensive results concerning the victims.
However, forensic anthropology has with various weaknesses. One major weakness is that it involves the use of expensive instruments. The instruments used are complicated and expensive and hence the profession needs a lot of training and commitment of resources. The other weakness is that forensic anthropology does not involve an analysis of the DNA of a victim therefore, it is difficult to determine the characteristics of an individual. Examination of the
DNA is unethical. Lack of specific as well as true analysis is the other major weakness of forensic anthropology. The investigation relies on estimates, but not actual figures (Crawford,
2011).
