It is well know that the model T Ford was created by Henry Ford in the early 1900’s. It popularity struck Americans where it counted; in their wallets. The Model T was created by Henry Ford so that all Americans, not just the rich, could have a chance at owning an automobile. Most automobiles at the turn of the century cost somewhere in the range of $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 where the Model T’s off the floor price ran closer to $300.00. So how was Ford able to produce such an affordable car? The real story is not the Model T Ford at all. How Henry Ford was able to not only change the way a car was produced but his ability to change the entire social and economical structure of the United States would be his defining moment.
Unlike common belief, Ford was not the first auto maker to use an assembly line to manufacture cars. Oldsmobile began using assembly lines in 1901. However Ford did something that drastically sped up the process. Ford mass produced parts for his vehicles and created the moving assembly line which took the average build time of one vehicle from twelve hours down to one and one half hours. By doing this Ford was able to speed up production and lower production cost. Ford could now not only sell the Model T for a significantly lower price than other automobiles but he could sell thousands more than his competitors. By using the continuous flow assembly line Ford was able to increase his measure of productivity by 75% over 10 years. Ford could generate 9000 automobiles a day by 1925.
Ford did have one problem with this new type of assembly line. This process made specific jobs very boring and tiresome for his line employees. He began to see great turnover and unrest in employment. So instead of letting this continue Ford decided to change his structure to retain employees. He changed the typical 48 hour work week to a 40 hour work week and created the 5 day work week instead of a 6 day work week. This was practically unheard of at the turn of the century. People were very used to working all the time, even children worked instead of going to school.
Fordism changed American industrial and consumer in many ways such as Henry Ford developed new techniques of car manufacturing and marketing that made it easier for ordinary American citizens to try themselves. After three years of establishing his company “Ford Motor Company” in 1905, Ford introduced to the American people “Model T” for which was a light-weight vehicle that can handle to cruise the country’s poorly maintained roads. In Europe for which the car that is mostly used over there is the “Mercedes” for which was targeted for high-class people of society over there and were superior in craftsmanship in the car manufacturing; however, Ford focused on mass production
This idea, to some extent, came from his desire to sell his cars on Main Street in Oshkosh and Topeka. By using the standardized Model T, Ford was able to produce a great amount of cars that are identical for cheap. The assembly line made every working man have the same task and to do that task well and efficient. The assembly line lead to mass production which increased the production by an incredible amount. All three steps contributed to helping Ford accomplish economies of scales because each step decreased the cost of Model T by spreading the costs out over a large number of cars. Ford offered an incredible perk for people working in his company. He offered the workers $5 a day minimum wage even though in other auto industries the wages were $2.34. So Ford was paying more than double the average wage to his workers, this shows his dedication to his work. Henry Ford despised Labor Unions for the sole reason that they were pointless and that because he thought he knew how to take care of his workers better than anybody else did. However, in 1941 he faced a general strike from his workers that made him change his mind, reluctantly. Ford had worked a lot to create a car that would be affordable to any common person. This radical idea of the automobile permeated throughout America with most, if not all credit renowned to Henry Ford. Observed as a technological mastermind, Ford commenced experiments involving machinery from the time he was adolescent to launching his career working at the Edison Illuminating Company. He examined internal combustion engines and gasoline buggy ideas eventually resulting in removing himself from Edison’s company and his introduction in the emerging automobile industry. Following in 1903, he established the Ford Motor Company, which expeditiously became a leader in the automotive industry and would gain extensive wealth within only a few decades. While other manufacturers strove to produce automobiles to be extravagant and luxurious predominantly for the wealthy, he immensely focused on efficient mass production of durable, affordable vehicles for the expanding middle-class market.
Ford was able to make a reliable and inexpensive automobile primarily because of his introduction of the innovative moving assembly line into the process of industrial manufacturing. The assembly line is a system for carrying an item that is being manufactured past a series of stationary workers who each assemble a particular portion of the finished product.
Ford used Taylor’s scientific management principles and come up with the mass production and assembly line. This benefitted the motor vehicle industry highly. The effects of Taylorism and Fordism in the industrial workplace were strong and between the period of 1919-1929 the output of industries in the U.S doubled as the number of workers decreased. There was an increase in unskilled labour as the skill was removed and placed into machines. It lead to the discouragement of workers ability to bargain on the basis of control over the workplace.
