Introduction/Discussion
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) form a partnership in 2008 to launch a 2-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative in reaction to the nursing profession transformation need in order to meet the requirement of the changing needs health care delivery (IOM, 2010). In their partnership, the two organization agreed that in order to achieve health care that is effective and accessible, nurses need to be exceptional in providing health care, and have a leadership skills. A committee was elected by IOM on the RWJF initiative to come up with a report that will make recommendations for a proposal which will move nurses and nursing future into action (IOM, 2010).
The aim of this essay is to discuss the work of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative and the Institute of Medicine study that prompt the nursing future report, ascertain the significance of this report in relation to nursing education, practice, and workforce, also examine the function of state-based action coalitions, and how they promote the plan of future of nursing campaign for action.
Importance of this report
The committee of this organizations review the role of nurses, work environment, and educational level of nurses in its attempt to picture what nursing profession will be in the future. After deliberating on the situation of nursing, four key messages were developed by the committee which form the recommendation they made in their report (IOM, 2010). They are developing a broad model to help every Registered Nurse to Baccalaureate degree programs in the state. The second initiative, Advancing Nursing Practice Team are focusing on nurses practicing to their full extent. They are working on a program to explain nurse’s role in the health care system.
Conclusion
The IOM report has lighten up the importance of nurses in the healthcare industry, and the special role they can play to move health care forward. Due to this significant roles of nurses in health care reform, nurses should be up to date in all aspects of healthcare, which will help them to meet the health needs of the diverse population. Nurses should collaborate with other health care members to provide coordinated and quality care to the patient.

The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.
The history of nurses hadn’t developed until the nineteenth century. The first law was passed to require that nurses attain a license in 1938. After passing this law, the New York State began a movement to have certain programs to promise new standards in the field. Since the first schools were opened the training and criteria has changed tremendously. Education standards for nurses have improved in many different ways. Programs are an option throughout the country, and there are laws to back up the qualification and training standards for licensure. The nursing field is an important role as a part of the health care team, and can benefit one is so many ways. The history of nurses has changed from being a minor occupation to a major one. In today’s society people rely on nurses, doctors, and specialists more than ever. Nurses have brightened our future in the most beneficial way (Hopke 592).
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been in operation for more than 40 years and has been instrumental in working to improve the status of health and the health care for all individuals within the United States of America. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), a philanthropy organization, has been involved in health matters facing Americans for over 40 years with focus to child and family wellbeing, health coverage, health leadership and workforce, health systems improvements and healthy weight. Since its inception in 1972, RWJF support has grown and is now the largest philanthropy body devoted exclusively to health in the nation (RWJF, 2015). The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report- The Future of Nursing described the role that nurses have in the current and future US health care environment (IOM, 2011). This report was completed at a time when the Affordable Care Act had been passed and a new emphasis was being put on interdisciplinary healthcare teams, care coordination, value-based payment systems, and preventative care (IOM, 2011). For many years, the nursing shortage has been a relevant topic in today’s society. The nursing shortage is defined as a lack of trained nurses to provide care for ill individuals. Nursing schools inability to grow programs quickly enough to meet demands (Nursing Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). The shortage is not only an issue in the United States but all over the world. This problem affects a wide range of people from current registered nurses, patients, and other members of the healthcare team. Profession of Nursing is always regards as a complex, dynamic and noble. The nursing profession requires many things such as hard work, a vast knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a passion for the noble profession. All these qualities are needed to be an effective nurse. Today, nurses are living in a world of ever changing field of medicine .The present patient statistics poses, nurses are expected to take responsibility of accomplishing the requirements. The requirement for excellent nursing skills is added as well as well-formed skills in different aspect. Because of the high demand in excellent nursing care, the IOM have declared the recommendations for the future of nursing.
A myriad of challenges are faced in healthcare today. From over-crowding and long waiting lists to staff shortages which have knock on effects resulting in inadequate skills mix and unacceptable nurse-patient ratios. An aging population, high birth rates and an increase in chronic diseases also puts pressure on the healthcare system. The nursing role has had to evolve in response to changing societal needs and the challenges in the healthcare system today. (McCurry et al. 2009). In nursing practice, the NLN’s mission aligns with extending nursing education by fostering excellence to progress a diverse team in evolving health on both national and global levels (NLN, 2016). The NLN seeks to be a leader in nursing education by setting goals and objectives. This organization plays a prominent role in nursing education by spearheading the nursing workforce with nursing certifications and examinations and serving as the main source for legislation reform. The NLN inspires students to apply professional clinical expertise to practice in an ethical manner with the utmost respect and value caring (Bavier, 2015). In nursing research, the NLN endorses evidence-based nursing education by promoting resources to foster research and evolve research initiatives to transform education in nursing (NLN, 2016). As stated in the mission, nursing excellence is an integral force for the basis of the NLN.
